Uses
- A source of omega-3 fats together with vitamins A and D for people who eat little oily fish.
- Topping up vitamin D intake, especially with limited sun exposure – but only one vitamin D-containing supplement at a time.
- General nutritional support; it does not treat any specific disease.
How to take it
Take one capsule a day with a meal, or as the label advises, and swallow it whole. Cod liver oil contains vitamin A as well as vitamin D, so do not take it with a multivitamin or other vitamin A or D supplement – the NHS advises keeping vitamin A from food and supplements to 1.5 mg a day or less, and not taking vitamin A supplements at all if you eat liver every week. Long-term excess vitamin A can weaken bones. Do not give cod liver oil to a child who already has vitamin drops. Avoid it in pregnancy unless your doctor advises it.
Side effects
Common
- Fishy aftertaste or burping.
- Nausea or heartburn.
- Loose stools.
Serious
Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.
- Too much vitamin A over time – headache, dry or peeling skin, hair loss, bone pain; stop and see a doctor.
- Too much vitamin D – vomiting, constipation, excessive thirst, confusion.
- Allergic reaction in people allergic to fish – rash, swelling, difficulty breathing.
Safety information
Alcohol
No direct interaction; heavy drinking harms the liver, where vitamin A is stored.
Pregnancy
Avoid cod liver oil and other vitamin A supplements in pregnancy unless your doctor advises – too much vitamin A can harm the baby.
Kidney problems
Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease or high calcium.
Liver problems
Tell your doctor if you have liver disease, as vitamin A is stored in the liver.
Children
Do not give with other vitamin drops – one vitamin supplement is enough. Use a children's dose only on advice.
Missed dose
Take it with your next meal; do not double up.
Interactions
- Multivitamins, vitamin A and vitamin D supplements – risk of too much vitamin A or D.
- Fish oil or other omega-3 products – avoid doubling up.
- Liver and liver products – if you eat them every week, the NHS advises not taking supplements that contain vitamin A.
