Uses
- Topping up magnesium when your diet is low in foods such as nuts, spinach and wholemeal bread.
- Low magnesium diagnosed by your doctor, in the dose they advise.
- Magnesium support when a doctor recommends it alongside other treatment.
How to take it
Follow the serving on the label – many brands state the 2000 mg magnesium bisglycinate (440 mg elemental magnesium) as a serving of more than one tablet. Take it with water, with or after food. The NHS says having 400 mg or less a day of magnesium from supplements is unlikely to cause harm, and that more than 400 mg for a short time can cause diarrhoea – so a full serving of these products is slightly above that level; start with a lower amount and use the full serving only if your doctor agrees. Do not take magnesium if you have kidney disease unless your doctor advises it, because it can build up in the blood. Keep it 2 hours apart from antibiotics and thyroid tablets.
Side effects
Common
- Diarrhoea or loose stools, especially above 400 mg a day.
- Stomach upset or nausea.
- Bloating or stomach cramps.
Serious
Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.
- Magnesium build-up in people with reduced kidney function – high-intake side effects mainly occur in them; get medical advice if you feel unwell.
- Severe or lasting diarrhoea – stop and see a doctor, as it can dehydrate you.
- Allergic reaction – rash, swelling, difficulty breathing.
Safety information
Alcohol
No direct interaction; heavy drinking lowers magnesium, so cut down.
Pregnancy
Ask your doctor before taking magnesium supplements in pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
Kidney problems
Avoid unless your doctor advises it – damaged kidneys cannot clear extra magnesium.
Liver problems
Tell your doctor if you have liver disease.
Children
Not for children unless a doctor advises a dose.
Missed dose
Take the next serving at the usual time; do not double up.
Interactions
- Antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin and doxycycline – magnesium reduces their absorption; keep at least 2 hours apart.
- Levothyroxine – take it at a different time from mineral supplements.
- Other magnesium products, antacids and laxatives containing magnesium – check the total.
