Uses
- Filling nutritional gaps when your diet is poor, restricted or irregular.
- Recovery after illness, fever or infection when appetite is low.
- Tiredness or weakness linked to low vitamin or mineral intake, as confirmed by a doctor.
- Supporting people with higher needs – the elderly, vegetarians with low B12, people on long-term medicines that deplete vitamins.
How to take it
Take one tablet a day, after a meal, with water, unless the pack or your doctor says otherwise. Taking it with food improves absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins and reduces nausea. Do not take more than one multivitamin product at a time, and check whether other supplements you take (calcium, iron, vitamin D, B-complex) overlap, because too much of some vitamins and minerals is harmful. Multivitamins do not replace a balanced diet – most people can get what they need from varied food. If tiredness, hair fall or weakness continues after a month or two, see a doctor for tests rather than adding more supplements.
Side effects
Common
- Mild nausea or stomach upset, especially on an empty stomach.
- Constipation or dark stools (from iron).
- Metallic taste.
- Bright yellow urine (from vitamin B2) – harmless.
Serious
Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.
- Allergic reaction – rash, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing.
- Iron overdose – very dangerous in children; vomiting, stomach pain, drowsiness. Keep tablets locked away.
- Too much vitamin A over long periods can weaken bones; excess vitamin D can raise calcium and harm the kidneys.
Safety information
Alcohol
Alcohol does not interact directly, but heavy drinking causes the vitamin deficiencies a multivitamin cannot fix; limit it.
Pregnancy
Do not take an ordinary multivitamin in pregnancy without checking the label – vitamin A in high doses can harm the baby. Use a pregnancy-specific supplement with folic acid as your doctor advises.
Kidney problems
Tell your doctor about kidney disease before taking supplements; some minerals (potassium, magnesium, phosphorus) and vitamin D can build up.
Liver problems
Tell your doctor about liver disease; avoid high-dose vitamin A and iron unless prescribed.
Children
Adult multivitamins are not for children. Use a children's product in the labelled dose and keep all tablets out of reach – iron overdose can be fatal in children.
Missed dose
Just take the next day's tablet as usual. Do not take two to catch up.
Interactions
- Antibiotics such as ofloxacin, levofloxacin, ciprofloxacin and doxycycline – the minerals block absorption; take the antibiotic 2 hours apart.
- Thyroid tablets (levothyroxine) – iron and calcium reduce absorption; leave a 4 hour gap.
- Other supplements (calcium, iron, vitamin D, B-complex, Zincovit plus Supradyn) – risk of exceeding safe limits.
- Warfarin – vitamin K in some multivitamins can change INR; tell your doctor.
- Antacids and acidity medicines – can reduce absorption of some vitamins and minerals; space them out.
Frequently asked questions
What is Zincovit tablet used for?
Zincovit is a multivitamin, multimineral and zinc tablet used to fill nutritional gaps, support recovery after illness and help with tiredness linked to low vitamin intake. It is not a treatment for any specific disease.
Zincovit vs Supradyn – which is better?
Both are daily multivitamin-mineral tablets with slightly different vitamin and mineral amounts and extras (Zincovit has grape seed extract and zinc; Supradyn has a broader mineral list). Neither is better for everyone – check the label against what you actually lack, and do not take both together.
When is the best time to take a multivitamin – morning or night?
After a meal, usually breakfast or lunch. Food improves absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and reduces nausea. B-vitamins can be mildly energising, so morning is often preferred.
Can I take a multivitamin daily for a long time?
A standard once-daily tablet is generally safe for most adults, but it is not a substitute for food. If you take it for months, check that you are not also taking separate vitamin A, D or iron, and review with a doctor.
Can I take Supradyn in pregnancy?
Not without checking with your doctor. Pregnancy needs folic acid and iron in specific amounts and should avoid high vitamin A, so a pregnancy-specific supplement is usually prescribed instead.
Does Zincovit cause weight gain?
No. Multivitamins do not contain calories and do not cause weight gain. Improved appetite after an illness is sometimes mistaken for a side effect.
Why is my urine yellow after taking a multivitamin?
Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) turns urine bright yellow. It is harmless and shows the excess is being passed out.
Can children take Zincovit or Supradyn tablets?
Adult tablets are not for children. Use a children's syrup or drops in the labelled dose, and keep adult tablets locked away because iron overdose is dangerous for children.
Do I need a prescription for a multivitamin?
No. Multivitamins are sold over the counter in India. But if you are taking them for ongoing tiredness, hair fall or weakness, see a doctor for tests rather than self-treating indefinitely.
