Uses
- Adding omega-3 fats (EPA and DHA) when you eat little or no oily fish.
- As part of a doctor's plan, together with diet and exercise, when blood triglycerides are high.
- General nutritional support – evidence for preventing heart disease with over-the-counter fish oil is mixed.
How to take it
Take one capsule a day with a meal, or as the label or your doctor advises. Swallow it whole – do not chew, crush or open it. Taking it with food reduces burping and a fishy aftertaste. Fish oil does not replace medicines your doctor has prescribed for cholesterol, blood pressure or heart disease. If your doctor is treating very high triglycerides, they may prescribe a specific omega-3 medicine and dose – follow that instead. Tell your doctor before starting if you have diabetes, an irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation or flutter), or liver, thyroid or pancreas disease, or are allergic to fish or shellfish.
