What it does
- These at-home peels combine alpha hydroxy acids (such as glycolic and lactic acid) with a beta hydroxy acid (salicylic acid) to exfoliate the skin surface and pores.
- Used occasionally, they may help skin look smoother and brighter and may help the look of clogged pores.
- At-home peels are high-strength cosmetics; reviews of chemical peeling note risks of irritation, burns and darkening, especially in brown skin, if misused.
- They are not the same as in-clinic peels done by a dermatologist, which are controlled and timed.
How to use
Use no more than once a week, at night, on clean, completely dry skin. Patch-test first on a small area of your jaw or inner arm and wait 24 to 48 hours. Apply a thin layer, avoiding the eyes, lips and nose corners, and leave on for no longer than the label says (usually up to 10 minutes; start with less). Rinse thoroughly with cool water, then apply a plain moisturiser. Skip retinol and other actives for 2 to 3 days, and wear sunscreen every morning. Rinse off immediately if you feel burning.

Frequently asked questions
How to use AHA BHA peeling solution?
Once a week at night on dry skin, after a patch test. Leave it on for the shortest time on the label, rinse well, moisturise, and use sunscreen daily.
How long should I leave the red peeling solution on?
Follow the label, which usually says up to 10 minutes. Start with a few minutes the first time and rinse at once if it burns.
Can I use AHA BHA peel every day?
No. These are high-strength peels meant for weekly use at most.
Minimalist AHA BHA peel side effects
A 32% AHA PHA BHA peel may cause stinging, redness, peeling and sun sensitivity, and can burn if left on too long. Patch-test and follow the time limit.
Can I use a peeling solution with retinol?
Not at the same time. Leave 2 to 3 days between a peel and retinol.
Is AHA BHA peel safe for dark skin?
Brown skin is more prone to dark marks after irritation. Use a shorter time, avoid overuse and stop if it burns. A dermatologist can advise on safer options.
Can I use a peeling solution on acne?
Avoid using it on inflamed, open or painful acne. See a dermatologist for active acne.
What to apply after an AHA BHA peel?
A plain, fragrance-free moisturiser at night, and sunscreen the next morning. Skip other actives for a few days.
