What it does
- Alpha arbutin is a tyrosinase inhibitor: lab and clinical studies suggest it may slow melanin production, which may help the look of dark spots and tanning.
- Reviews describe it as a gentler cosmetic option for uneven tone, though large, long-term human trials are limited.
- It is commonly combined with niacinamide or hyaluronic acid in serums.
- Any change is gradual and works only alongside daily sun protection.
How to use
Apply 2 to 3 drops once or twice a day to clean, dry skin, before moisturiser. Use sunscreen every morning, because sun exposure darkens spots again. Give it 8 to 12 weeks. Patch-test behind your ear or on your inner arm for 7 to 10 days before using it on your face. If a dark patch is spreading, changing or bleeding, see a dermatologist rather than treating it yourself.

Frequently asked questions
Alpha arbutin vs niacinamide: which is better for dark spots?
They work differently and are often used together. Alpha arbutin may slow melanin production; niacinamide may reduce how pigment is passed to skin cells. Neither works without sunscreen.
Can I use alpha arbutin and niacinamide together?
Yes. Many serums already combine them. Patch-test first.
Alpha arbutin serum day or night?
Either. It is not known to make skin sun-sensitive, but you must use sunscreen in the day for it to be worth using.
How long does alpha arbutin take to work?
Expect at least 8 to 12 weeks of regular use before judging results.
Can alpha arbutin remove tanning?
It may help tanning fade a little faster, but sun protection is what stops new tanning. No serum can promise to remove it.
Minimalist alpha arbutin side effects
A 2% alpha arbutin serum may cause mild redness, itching or dryness in some people. Patch-test, start once a day and stop if irritation continues.
Is alpha arbutin safe in pregnancy?
There is limited safety data. Ask your doctor before using it during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Can I use alpha arbutin with vitamin C?
Yes. They are often used together; use vitamin C in the morning and alpha arbutin at night if your skin stings.
