What it does

  • Ceramides are fats naturally found in the top layer of skin; they help form the barrier that keeps water in and irritants out.
  • Reviews show moisturisers that contain barrier lipids such as ceramides may help dry, flaky skin feel softer and lose less water.
  • A good moisturiser may make actives like retinol and acids easier to tolerate.
  • Ceramide creams are usually fragrance-free and suit sensitive skin, though any formula can irritate some people.

How to use

Apply a coin-sized amount to face and neck after cleansing and any serum, morning and night. Apply within a few minutes of washing while skin is slightly damp to help lock in water. In the morning, follow with sunscreen. Patch-test behind your ear or on your inner arm for a few days if you have sensitive skin.

Frequently asked questions

What does a ceramide moisturiser do?

It helps support your skin barrier by adding lipids similar to those your skin makes, which may reduce dryness and flaking.

Is ceramide moisturiser good for oily skin?

Yes, if you pick a light, non-comedogenic formula. Oily skin can still have a weak barrier, especially when using acne actives.

CeraVe vs Cetaphil moisturising cream: what is the difference?

CeraVe Moisturizing Cream lists three ceramides and hyaluronic acid; Cetaphil Moisturising Cream lists almond oil, niacinamide and panthenol. Both are rich creams for dry skin; choose by how your skin feels.

Can I use ceramide moisturiser with retinol?

Yes. Applying a ceramide moisturiser after retinol is a common way to reduce dryness and irritation.

Can I use ceramide moisturiser on my face every day?

Yes. It is meant for daily use, morning and night.

Is ceramide cream good for a damaged skin barrier?

It may help. Stop harsh products, keep your routine simple, and use a ceramide moisturiser and sunscreen. See a dermatologist if redness or burning continues.

Can I use ceramide moisturiser instead of sunscreen?

No. A moisturiser without SPF does not protect from UV. Apply sunscreen on top in the morning.

Ceramide moisturiser in summer or monsoon?

Yes, but you may prefer a lighter gel-cream in humid weather and a richer cream in winter or air-conditioned rooms.
