What it does
- Dark circles have several causes: extra pigment (common in Indian skin), visible blood vessels through thin skin, shadows from hollows, puffiness, rubbing and genetics.
- A systematic review found topical creams and serums are among the options studied; ingredients such as vitamin C, niacinamide, caffeine and peptides may help the look of some types of dark circles modestly.
- Moisturising eye creams may make the skin look smoother and less crepey; caffeine may temporarily reduce the look of puffiness.
- Hollows and genetic dark circles usually do not change much with creams.
How to use
Use a rice-grain amount for both eyes, once or twice a day. Dot it along the orbital bone and pat gently with your ring finger; do not rub or tug. Keep it away from the lash line. Use sunscreen and sunglasses in the day, because sun exposure darkens pigment. Patch-test on your inner arm or behind your ear for a few days first, because skin around the eyes is thin and reacts easily.

Frequently asked questions
Do under-eye creams really remove dark circles?
No cream can remove dark circles fully. Some ingredients may help the look of pigment-type dark circles over weeks; hollows and genetic circles change little.
How to use under-eye cream?
Use a rice-grain amount for both eyes, pat gently along the bone with your ring finger, and avoid the lash line.
Mamaearth Bye Bye Dark Circles: what's in it and what can it do?
It lists cucumber and peptides. Like other eye creams, any change is gradual and depends on the cause of your dark circles.
Under-eye cream morning or night?
Both. In the morning, follow with sunscreen; caffeine creams may suit mornings for puffiness.
What causes dark circles?
Pigment, thin skin showing blood vessels, hollows, puffiness, rubbing, allergies and genetics. Sleep loss can make them look worse.
At what age should I start using eye cream?
There is no set age. Use one if you have dryness, puffiness or dark circles; otherwise your regular moisturiser and sunscreen are enough.
Can I use my face moisturiser under my eyes?
Yes, if it does not sting. Skip strong actives like retinol and acids near the eyes.
Do dark circles go away with sleep?
Sleep may help puffiness and tired-looking skin, but pigment and genetic dark circles often stay.
