What it does
- Gentle, soap-free cleansers use milder surfactants that remove dirt, sweat and sunscreen with less stripping of the skin's natural oils.
- Reviews of cleansers note that harsh soaps can raise skin pH and disturb the barrier, which may leave skin dry and tight.
- A gentle cleanser is a good base for routines that include retinol, acids or acne treatments, which already dry the skin.
- Non-foaming or low-foam formulas often suit dry and sensitive skin.
How to use
Use morning and night, or just at night if your skin is very dry. Wet your face with lukewarm (not hot) water, massage a small amount with fingertips for 30 to 60 seconds, rinse and pat dry with a soft towel. Apply moisturiser within a few minutes. Patch-test a new cleanser on your jawline for a few days if your skin reacts easily.

Frequently asked questions
Which face wash is good for dry and sensitive skin?
Look for a soap-free, fragrance-free, non-foaming or low-foam cleanser. Patch-test before switching.
Cetaphil vs CeraVe hydrating cleanser
Cetaphil Gentle Skin Hydrating cleanser lists niacinamide and vitamin B5; CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser lists ceramides and hyaluronic acid. Both are non-foaming; compare price per ml and how your skin feels.
Can I use a gentle cleanser twice a day?
Yes. If your skin is very dry, you can use only water in the morning and cleanser at night.
Is a gentle face wash enough to remove sunscreen and makeup?
For light makeup and sunscreen, usually yes. For heavy or waterproof makeup, use micellar water or a cleansing balm first.
Is Cetaphil face wash good for oily skin?
The gentle cleanser is designed for dry to normal sensitive skin. Cetaphil also sells an oily-skin cleanser that foams.
Can I use a gentle cleanser for acne-prone skin?
Yes, especially if your acne treatments make your skin dry. Gentle washing is preferred over harsh scrubbing.
Do I need a toner after a gentle cleanser?
Not necessarily. A toner is optional; moisturiser and sunscreen matter more.
Can men use a gentle face wash?
Yes. It suits anyone with dry or sensitive skin, including after shaving.
