What it does
- Glycolic acid is the smallest alpha hydroxy acid (AHA); it loosens the bonds between dead skin cells so they shed more easily.
- Regular low-strength use may help skin look smoother and brighter and may help the look of uneven tone.
- Reviews of chemical exfoliation note AHAs can increase sun sensitivity, so daily sunscreen is needed.
- Leave-on toners are much milder than in-clinic glycolic peels.
How to use
Use at night, 2 to 3 times a week to start. After cleansing and drying your face, apply a few drops on a cotton pad or your palms and spread over the face, avoiding the eyes and lips. Do not rinse. Follow with moisturiser. Increase frequency slowly if your skin is comfortable. Wear sunscreen every morning, and for a week after you stop. Patch-test behind your ear or on your inner arm for 7 to 10 days first.

Frequently asked questions
How to use glycolic acid toner?
Use it at night, 2 to 3 times a week at first, after cleansing. Do not rinse. Follow with moisturiser and wear sunscreen every morning.
Can I use glycolic acid every day?
Some people can after several weeks. If you get stinging, dryness or redness, go back to a few nights a week.
Can I use glycolic acid and niacinamide together?
Yes, many people can. If you feel stinging, use them at different times.
Can I use glycolic acid with retinol?
Use them on different nights. Using both together often causes irritation.
Minimalist glycolic acid 8% toner side effects
An 8% glycolic acid exfoliating liquid may cause stinging, redness, dryness and sun sensitivity. Start slowly and use sunscreen daily.
Glycolic acid toner vs salicylic acid: which is right for me?
Glycolic acid works on the skin surface and suits dull or uneven texture; salicylic acid is oil-soluble and suits oily, clogged pores. Use one at a time.
Can I use glycolic acid on underarms or body?
Some products say so. Skin there can be sensitive, especially after shaving, so patch-test and stop if it stings.
Does glycolic acid make skin sensitive to the sun?
Yes. AHAs can increase sunburn risk. Use sunscreen every day while using them and for a week after you stop.
