What it does

  • Hyaluronic acid is a humectant: it draws water into the top layer of skin, which may help skin look and feel more hydrated.
  • Reviews of clinical studies report that topical hyaluronic acid may improve skin hydration and the look of fine lines caused by dryness.
  • It is light and usually non-greasy, so it suits oily and acne-prone skin that still feels tight.
  • It is generally well tolerated and rarely irritating on its own.

How to use

Apply 2 to 3 drops to clean, slightly damp skin, morning and/or night, then seal it in with a moisturiser. In dry weather or air-conditioned rooms, the moisturiser on top matters because a humectant alone may not be enough. In the morning, finish with sunscreen. Patch-test a new product behind your ear or on your inner arm for 7 to 10 days.

  • Tightness if used without a moisturiser in very dry air
  • Breakouts in a few people, usually linked to the overall product

Who should avoid it

Patch test first. Apply a small amount on the inner forearm or behind the ear and wait 24 hours before using it on your face. Stop if you notice redness, itching or swelling.

Frequently asked questions

How to use hyaluronic acid serum?

Pat a few drops onto damp skin after cleansing, then apply moisturiser on top. Use it morning, night or both.

Can I use hyaluronic acid with niacinamide?

Yes. They are commonly used together. Apply the thinner one first, then moisturiser.

Is hyaluronic acid good for oily skin?

Yes. It hydrates without adding oil. Oily skin can still be dehydrated, and a light hydrating serum may help.

Hyaluronic acid serum day or night?

Either. It does not make skin more sensitive to the sun, so it can go under sunscreen in the morning.

Can I use hyaluronic acid with retinol?

Yes. Many people use hyaluronic acid to help with the dryness retinol can cause.

Does hyaluronic acid reduce wrinkles?

It may soften the look of fine lines caused by dryness by hydrating the skin. Its effect on deeper wrinkles is limited and temporary.

What does 2% hyaluronic acid mean?

It usually refers to the share of a hyaluronic acid solution or blend in the formula. Higher numbers are not necessarily better; how the product is formulated matters more.

Hyaluronic acid serum side effects

Side effects are uncommon. Stinging or breakouts are usually due to other ingredients. Patch-test first and stop if irritation continues.
