What it does
- Children's sunscreens are often mineral-based (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide), which the AAD notes may cause less irritation on young skin.
- Sun protection in childhood may lower the risk of sunburn, which is painful and can blister young skin.
- The NHS advises children to wear at least SPF 30, stay in shade around midday and cover up with clothing and hats.
- Babies under 6 months should be kept out of direct strong sunlight rather than relying on sunscreen.
How to use
For children over 6 months, apply a generous layer to all skin not covered by clothing (face, ears, neck, hands, feet) 15 minutes before going outside. Reapply every 2 hours and after swimming, sweating or towelling. Use hats, sun-protective clothing and shade between 11 am and 3 pm. Patch-test a small amount on your child's inner arm a day before first use. Keep it away from the eyes; if it gets in, rinse with water.

Frequently asked questions
From what age can I use sunscreen on my baby?
From 6 months onwards. Before that, keep babies out of direct strong sun and cover them with clothing and shade, and ask a doctor if sun exposure cannot be avoided.
Which sunscreen is safe for kids?
Choose one made for children, at least SPF 30, broad-spectrum, ideally mineral (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) and fragrance-free. Patch-test first.
How much sunscreen should I put on my child?
Enough to leave a visible layer before rubbing in, on all uncovered skin. Reapply every 2 hours.
Can I use my own sunscreen on my child?
Children over 6 months can use many adult sunscreens, but kids' formulas are usually gentler. Avoid products with acids, retinol or strong fragrance.
Should kids wear sunscreen to school?
If they play outside in the day, yes. Apply before school and pack a small tube for reapplying.
Is mineral sunscreen better for kids?
Mineral filters are less likely to irritate sensitive skin, which is why the AAD suggests them for young children.
Can sunscreen cause rash in children?
Occasionally. Stop using it and rinse the skin. If the rash is severe or spreads, see a doctor.
Does my child need sunscreen on cloudy days?
Yes. UV passes through clouds. Shade and clothing still matter most for young children.
