What it does
- Lips have a thin outer layer and little natural protection, so they can burn and darken with sun exposure.
- The AAD advises using a lip balm with SPF 30 or higher when outdoors.
- Balms with occlusive ingredients (such as petrolatum, waxes, shea butter or ceramides) may help dry, chapped lips hold moisture.
- Some lip balms add actives such as kojic acid or vitamin C for the look of dark lips; evidence for these on lips is limited.
How to use
Apply a generous layer before going out and reapply every 2 hours, after eating or drinking, and after wiping your mouth. At night, use a plain, fragrance-free balm. Avoid licking your lips. If you have a reaction to cosmetics, patch-test a new balm on a small area of skin near your lip line for a few days first. See a doctor if your lips stay cracked, swollen or sore for more than two weeks.

Frequently asked questions
Do I really need SPF in lip balm?
Yes, if you are outdoors. Lips burn easily, and the AAD recommends SPF 30 or higher for lips.
How often should I reapply SPF lip balm?
Every 2 hours outdoors and after eating, drinking or wiping your mouth.
Can lip balm with SPF reduce dark lips?
Sun protection may help stop lips from darkening further. Dark lips can also come from smoking, friction, allergy or genetics; no balm can promise to change lip colour.
Minimalist lip balm SPF 30: what's in it?
It lists SPF 30 with ceramides and hyaluronic acid. Whether it suits you depends on your lips; check the ingredients for any you react to.
Can I use SPF lip balm at night?
You can, but you do not need SPF at night. A plain, fragrance-free balm or petroleum jelly is enough.
Why do my lips stay chapped even with lip balm?
Licking your lips, flavoured or scented balms, and allergy to an ingredient are common causes. Switch to a plain balm and see a doctor if it continues for two weeks.
Is tinted lip balm with SPF as good as plain?
If it is labelled with the same SPF and applied generously, it protects similarly. Reapply often.
Is SPF lip balm safe for kids?
For children over 6 months, a kids' lip balm with SPF is fine. Avoid strongly flavoured balms that encourage licking.
