What it does
- Rice water toners use rice extract or fermented rice water, often with hydrating ingredients such as niacinamide, ceramides or hyaluronic acid.
- They may add a light layer of hydration and help skin feel soft; most of the "glass skin" effect comes from these hydrating ingredients.
- Evidence for rice extracts on skin is limited and mostly from lab or small studies; claims about brightening should be treated with caution.
- Rice-derived ingredients such as gamma-oryzanol have antioxidant properties in lab studies, but this does not prove a visible effect on skin.
How to use
After cleansing, pour a few drops into your palms and press into the face and neck, or use a cotton pad. Then apply serum and moisturiser, and sunscreen in the morning. Use once or twice a day. Patch-test on your inner arm or behind your ear for a few days first. Homemade rice water is not recommended on the face because it can spoil quickly and grow microbes.
