What it does
- Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) that is oil-soluble, so it can work inside pores and may help loosen dead skin cells and oil.
- It may help reduce the look of blackheads, whiteheads and clogged pores.
- Reviews show the evidence for salicylic acid in acne is modest; it is used as a cosmetic support, not a replacement for dermatologist-advised treatment.
- It may help skin look smoother by gently exfoliating the surface.
How to use
Start with a 2% serum 2 to 3 nights a week on clean, dry skin, then build up to daily use if your skin is comfortable. Apply a thin layer to the whole oily area or T-zone, avoid the eyes and corners of the nose and mouth, and follow with a moisturiser. Wear sunscreen every morning. Patch-test behind your ear or on your inner arm for 7 to 10 days first.

Frequently asked questions
How to use salicylic acid serum for acne?
Use it 2 to 3 nights a week at first on clean, dry skin, then increase slowly. Follow with moisturiser and wear sunscreen daily. If acne is painful, widespread or leaving marks, see a dermatologist.
Can I use salicylic acid and niacinamide together?
Yes. Many people use both. If you feel stinging, use salicylic acid at night and niacinamide in the morning.
Salicylic acid serum day or night?
Night is more common so it does not sit under makeup, but it can be used in the day too with sunscreen.
Minimalist salicylic acid 2% serum side effects
A 2% salicylic acid serum may cause dryness, peeling, stinging or redness, especially if used daily from the start or with other exfoliants. Begin with a few nights a week and moisturise.
Can salicylic acid remove blackheads?
It may help reduce the look of blackheads by loosening oil and dead cells in pores. Results vary, and blackheads often return without regular care.
Can I use salicylic acid every day?
Some people can once their skin adjusts. If you see dryness, peeling or stinging, cut back to every other night.
Can I use salicylic acid with retinol?
It is safer to use them on different nights at first, because together they can dry and irritate the skin.
Is salicylic acid safe during pregnancy?
Ask your doctor first. Low-strength wash-off products are generally seen as lower-risk than leave-on serums or peels, but advice depends on you.
