What it does

  • Gel, fluid and matte sunscreens are lighter and may feel less greasy on oily skin, which makes daily use easier.
  • Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen may help prevent acne marks and dark spots from getting darker, a common concern in Indian skin.
  • Non-comedogenic and oil-free formulas may lower the chance of clogged pores, though breakouts can still happen.
  • Matte finishes often use oil-absorbing powders; they reduce shine for a few hours but do not stop oil production.

How to use

Apply sunscreen as the last step of your morning routine, about 15 minutes before going out. For face and neck, use at least 1 teaspoon, roughly two finger-lengths. Reapply every 2 hours when outdoors and after sweating, swimming or wiping your face. Use it on cloudy days and near windows too. Patch-test a new sunscreen behind your ear or on your inner arm for a few days before using it on your face. If your skin gets shiny, blot with tissue before reapplying rather than piling on more layers.

Frequently asked questions

Which type of sunscreen is good for oily skin?

Gel, fluid or matte sunscreens labelled oil-free or non-comedogenic usually feel lighter. Look for SPF 30 or more and PA+++ or PA++++.

Does sunscreen cause pimples?

Some formulas can, but many people break out from not cleansing well at night. Try a light gel sunscreen and wash your face properly in the evening.

Can oily skin skip moisturiser and use only sunscreen?

Some people with oily skin find a gel sunscreen hydrating enough. If your skin feels tight, add a light gel moisturiser.

Re'equil Ultra Matte vs The Derma Co Ultra Matte sunscreen

Both are matte gel sunscreens marketed for oily skin; check the SPF and PA on the label and compare price per gram. Patch-test to see which feels better on you.

How to reapply sunscreen on oily skin?

Blot oil with a tissue, then apply a thin layer. A sunscreen stick or spray can help over makeup, but apply enough.

Is matte sunscreen good for acne-prone skin?

Often yes, if it is non-comedogenic. Matte does not mean acne-safe for everyone, so watch your skin for two weeks.

Does sunscreen make oily skin oilier?

Heavy creams can feel greasy. Gel and fluid textures are less likely to.

Should I wear sunscreen in monsoon?

Yes. UV reaches you on cloudy days. A light, water-resistant gel may feel better in humidity.
