What it does

  • Sunscreen filters UV rays; studies show regular use lowers the risk of sunburn and may help prevent tanning, dark spots getting darker and signs of photoageing.
  • SPF measures protection against UVB (burning rays). SPF 50 filters slightly more UVB than SPF 30, but how much you apply matters more than the number.
  • The PA rating (PA+ to PA++++) indicates UVA protection, which matters for tanning and pigmentation; PA+++ or PA++++ is preferred.
  • Dermatology bodies including the AAD and NHS advise using broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30 on exposed skin every day.

How to use

Apply sunscreen as the last step of your morning routine, about 15 minutes before going out. For face and neck, use at least 1 teaspoon, roughly two finger-lengths. Reapply every 2 hours when outdoors and after sweating, swimming or wiping your face. Use it on cloudy days and near windows too. Patch-test a new sunscreen behind your ear or on your inner arm for a few days before using it on your face.

Can be combined with / Avoid combining with

Can be combined with

  • Any serum or moisturiser underneath (vitamin C, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid)
  • Makeup on top once it has set
  • Hats, sunglasses and shade

Avoid combining with

  • Mixing sunscreen into moisturiser or foundation, which dilutes it
  • Relying on SPF in makeup alone

Possible side effects

  • Stinging around the eyes
  • Breakouts or a greasy feel with heavier formulas
  • Allergic or irritant reactions to a UV filter or fragrance (uncommon)
  • White cast with some formulas

Who should avoid it

  • Anyone allergic to a specific UV filter or ingredient in the product (choose another formula)
  • Babies under 6 months: keep them out of direct sun rather than using sunscreen, unless a doctor advises otherwise
  • During pregnancy, sunscreen use is encouraged; if you prefer, choose a mineral formula and ask your doctor about any concerns
Patch test first. Apply a small amount on the inner forearm or behind the ear and wait 24 hours before using it on your face. Stop if you notice redness, itching or swelling.

Frequently asked questions

SPF 30 vs SPF 50: which is better for Indian skin?

Both can protect well if applied properly. SPF 50 filters slightly more UVB. For long hours outdoors or if you get pigmentation, SPF 50 with PA+++ or PA++++ is a sensible choice.

How much sunscreen should I apply on my face?

At least 1 teaspoon for face and neck, about two finger-lengths. Most people apply too little.

Do I need sunscreen indoors?

If you sit near windows or go out during the day, yes. UVA passes through glass.

How often should I reapply sunscreen?

Every 2 hours when outdoors, and after sweating, swimming or towelling.

What does PA++++ mean on sunscreen?

PA indicates UVA protection. More plus signs mean higher UVA protection, with PA++++ the highest.

Can I use sunscreen instead of moisturiser?

Some sunscreens are moisturising enough for oily skin. Dry skin usually needs a moisturiser underneath.

Is chemical sunscreen safe?

Regulators allow approved UV filters in set amounts. Reviews say evidence of harm from normal use is not established, but research continues. If you are concerned, choose a mineral sunscreen.

Does sunscreen prevent tanning?

It may reduce tanning when applied in enough quantity and reapplied, but no sunscreen blocks all UV. Shade and clothing help too.

Should I apply sunscreen before or after moisturiser?

After. Sunscreen is the last step of your morning skincare, before makeup.
