What it does

  • Tinted sunscreens contain pigments, usually iron oxides, that give light coverage and reduce white cast.
  • Reviews show iron oxides may add protection against visible light, which can darken melasma and dark spots in brown skin; regular sunscreen does not block much visible light.
  • They protect against UV like other sunscreens when applied in the right amount.
  • Shade matching matters: pick a tint close to your skin tone so you are willing to apply enough.

How to use

Apply sunscreen as the last step of your morning routine, about 15 minutes before going out. For face and neck, use at least 1 teaspoon, roughly two finger-lengths. Reapply every 2 hours when outdoors and after sweating, swimming or wiping your face. Use it on cloudy days and near windows too. Patch-test a new sunscreen behind your ear or on your inner arm for a few days before using it on your face. Because tinted sunscreen also acts like light makeup, people tend to apply too thin a layer; apply the full amount and blend.

A sunscreen with added pigment (usually iron oxides) that gives a light tint and may protect against visible light as well as UV.

Does tinted sunscreen help with dark spots?

Test on your jawline in daylight. Some brands offer several shades; a universal tint may look grey or orange on some skin tones.
