Uses
- Mild to moderate acne – blackheads, whiteheads and small pimples on the face, chest or back.
- Preventing new pimples from forming once acne is under control.
- Along with benzoyl peroxide or an antibiotic for more inflamed acne, as prescribed by a dermatologist.
How to take it
Apply at bedtime once a day. Wash the face with a mild, soap-free cleanser, pat dry and wait a few minutes, then spread a pea-sized amount thinly over the whole acne-prone area – not just on individual pimples. Avoid the eyes, lips, nostrils and any cut or sunburnt skin. Use a non-oily moisturiser in the morning and a sunscreen every day, because adapalene makes skin more sun-sensitive. Acne can look slightly worse in the first 2 to 4 weeks; the real improvement takes 8 to 12 weeks, so do not give up early. Using more gel does not work faster, it only irritates.
Side effects
Common
- Dryness, peeling and redness, mostly in the first few weeks.
- Mild burning or stinging after applying.
- Skin more sensitive to sunlight.
- Temporary flare of acne in the first weeks.
Serious
Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.
- Severe allergic reaction – swelling of the face or lips, difficulty breathing.
- Severe burning, blistering or swelling of the skin.
- Eye irritation if it gets into the eyes – rinse well and seek help if it persists.
Safety information
Alcohol
Drinking alcohol does not interact with the gel. Avoid alcohol-based toners and astringents on the skin, which add to dryness.
Pregnancy
Retinoids are avoided in pregnancy. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to be; if breastfeeding, keep it away from the chest.
Kidney problems
Not relevant – very little is absorbed through the skin.
Liver problems
Not relevant at normal topical use.
Children
Used from 12 years of age. Not recommended in younger children.
Missed dose
Apply it the next night as usual. Do not apply a double amount.
Interactions
- Benzoyl peroxide – can be combined (your dermatologist may prescribe both), usually applied at different times of day.
- Other retinoids (tretinoin, isotretinoin cream), salicylic acid or glycolic acid peels – too much irritation; avoid combining without advice.
- Harsh scrubs, alcohol-based toners, lime juice or home remedies – increase dryness and peeling.
- Waxing or laser on treated skin – stop adapalene several days before, as the skin tears easily.
Frequently asked questions
How long does Adaferin Gel take to work?
Acne may actually look a little worse in the first 2 to 4 weeks as blocked pores clear. Visible improvement usually takes 8 to 12 weeks of nightly use, so stick with it.
Should I apply Adaferin on the whole face or only on pimples?
On the whole acne-prone area, as a thin layer. Adapalene works by preventing new pimples from forming, not just by drying out existing ones.
Can I use Adaferin Gel in the morning?
It is best applied at night, because sunlight breaks it down and makes the skin more sun-sensitive. Use a sunscreen in the morning instead.
Deriva MS vs Adaferin – which is better?
Both contain adapalene 0.1%. Deriva MS uses a microsphere aqueous base that some people find less irritating; Adaferin is the original Galderma brand. Your dermatologist will choose based on your skin type.
Is adapalene safe in pregnancy?
Retinoids are avoided in pregnancy as a precaution, even though very little is absorbed through the skin. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a baby.
My skin is peeling with Adaferin – should I stop?
Mild dryness and peeling are expected in the first weeks. Use a gentle moisturiser, apply the gel on alternate nights for a while, and see your doctor if there is severe burning or swelling.
Can I use Adaferin Gel with benzoyl peroxide?
Yes, dermatologists often combine them – adapalene at night and benzoyl peroxide in the morning, or as a fixed combination gel. Do not add other acids or scrubs on top.
Does Adaferin Gel need a prescription?
In India adapalene is a Schedule H medicine, so a prescription is required. A dermatologist can also advise the right strength and combination for your acne.
