Uses
- Headache, toothache and dental pain.
- Muscle pain, sprains, back pain and pain after injury.
- Period pain.
- Joint pain and swelling in arthritis flare-ups.
- Fever with body ache, when the doctor prefers a combination.
How to take it
Take one tablet with or just after food, swallowed whole with a glass of water, up to three times a day as your doctor advises, leaving at least 4 to 6 hours between doses. Use the lowest dose that controls the pain for the shortest time – usually a few days; do not take it for more than 10 days without a doctor's review. Do not take any other paracetamol or ibuprofen product at the same time. Stop and see a doctor if you get black stools, vomit blood, severe stomach pain, breathlessness or swelling of the ankles.
Side effects
Common
- Indigestion, stomach ache, nausea.
- Heartburn or acidity.
- Diarrhoea or constipation.
- Headache or dizziness.
Serious
Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.
- Stomach ulcer or bleeding – black tarry stools, vomiting blood, severe stomach pain.
- Kidney problems – passing less urine, swollen ankles, breathlessness.
- Allergic reaction or asthma attack – wheezing, swollen face, itchy raised rash.
- Liver damage if the paracetamol limit is exceeded – yellow eyes, vomiting.
Safety information
Alcohol
Avoid alcohol. It increases the risk of stomach bleeding with ibuprofen and liver strain with paracetamol.
Pregnancy
Avoid, especially in the last 3 months of pregnancy, because ibuprofen can harm the baby's heart and kidneys. Plain paracetamol is preferred in pregnancy. Ask your doctor before using while breastfeeding.
Kidney problems
Do not use in kidney disease without a doctor's advice. Ibuprofen can worsen kidney function, especially if you are dehydrated.
Liver problems
Avoid in liver disease. Never exceed the paracetamol daily limit.
Children
This adult-strength tablet is not for children under 12. Children need weight-based syrups prescribed by a doctor.
Missed dose
Take it when you remember if you still have pain, keeping a gap of at least 4 hours from the next dose. Do not double up.
Interactions
- Other painkillers – aspirin, diclofenac, naproxen, aceclofenac or Dolo/Crocin – do not combine; ulcer and overdose risk.
- Blood thinners (warfarin, clopidogrel, aspirin) – higher bleeding risk.
- Blood pressure medicines (telmisartan, amlodipine, ramipril) and water pills – ibuprofen can blunt their effect and strain the kidneys.
- Steroids (prednisolone) and antidepressants (SSRIs) – more stomach bleeding.
- Methotrexate and lithium – levels can rise.
Frequently asked questions
Combiflam before or after food?
Always with or just after food. Ibuprofen on an empty stomach irritates the stomach lining and raises the risk of acidity and ulcers.
Combiflam vs Dolo 650 – which is better for fever?
Dolo 650 is plain paracetamol and is gentler on the stomach, so it is usually the first choice for fever. Combiflam adds ibuprofen, which helps more with pain and swelling but should be avoided in dengue, stomach problems and kidney disease.
Can I take Combiflam in dengue?
No. Ibuprofen increases bleeding risk, which is dangerous in dengue. Use plain paracetamol as advised by your doctor.
Can I take Combiflam with alcohol?
Avoid it. Alcohol with ibuprofen increases the chance of stomach bleeding, and with paracetamol it strains the liver.
How many Combiflam tablets can I take in a day?
Usually no more than three tablets in 24 hours, spaced at least 4 to 6 hours apart, and only for a few days. Follow your doctor's instructions and never combine with other paracetamol or ibuprofen products.
Is Combiflam safe in pregnancy?
No. Ibuprofen should be avoided in pregnancy, particularly after 20 weeks. Paracetamol alone is the preferred painkiller – ask your doctor.
Can Ibugesic Plus be given to children?
The adult tablet is not for children under 12. Children should get a weight-based ibuprofen or paracetamol syrup prescribed by a paediatrician.
Does Combiflam cause acidity?
Yes, indigestion and heartburn are common because of ibuprofen. Taking it with food helps; if you have a history of ulcers or need it for more than a few days, your doctor may add a stomach protector.
Is Combiflam a prescription medicine in India?
Ibuprofen plus paracetamol combinations are Schedule H in India, so chemists should ask for a prescription even though they are widely sold over the counter.
