What Telmisartan 80 mg is used for

  • High blood pressure (hypertension) – the 80 mg strength is used when 40 mg is not enough.
  • Lowering the risk of heart attack and stroke in people aged 55 and above who are at high cardiovascular risk.
  • Protecting the kidneys in people who have both diabetes and high blood pressure (diabetic nephropathy).
  • Sometimes used in heart failure, as decided by a cardiologist.

Frequently asked questions

Telma 40 vs Telma 80 – what is the difference?

Both contain telmisartan; Telma 80 has double the dose. Doctors usually start with a lower dose and move to 80 mg if blood pressure is still not controlled after a few weeks. Do not switch strengths on your own.

Can I take Telma 80 with alcohol?

It is best to avoid or limit alcohol. Alcohol lowers blood pressure further and can make you dizzy or faint, especially when you first start telmisartan.

Telma 80 morning or night?

Either is fine as long as you take it at the same time every day. Many people take it in the morning; if it makes you drowsy, your doctor may suggest night time.

Is Telma 80 safe in pregnancy?

No. Telmisartan carries a strong warning against use in pregnancy because it can harm the unborn baby. If you are pregnant or planning to be, tell your doctor so you can be switched to a safer medicine.
