Uses

  • Typhoid fever (a common use in India, as decided by a doctor).
  • Urinary tract infections.
  • Throat, tonsil, sinus and middle-ear infections caused by bacteria.
  • Chest infections – bronchitis flare-ups.
  • Uncomplicated gonorrhoea (single dose, as prescribed).

How to take it

Take one 200 mg tablet twice a day (every 12 hours), or as prescribed, with or without food; taking it with food reduces stomach upset. Swallow with water (DT tablets can be dispersed in water). Courses are typically 5 to 7 days, longer for typhoid. Finish the whole course even if you feel better.

Side effects

Common

  • Diarrhoea, loose stools.
  • Nausea, stomach pain, gas.

  • Severe allergic reaction – hives, swelling of the face or throat, breathing difficulty.
  • Severe skin reactions with blistering.

Safety information

Alcohol

No direct interaction, but alcohol worsens stomach upset and dehydration. Avoid it while unwell.

Pregnancy

Cefixime is generally considered acceptable in pregnancy and breastfeeding when prescribed by a doctor.

Kidney problems

The dose is reduced in significant kidney disease. Tell your doctor.

Liver problems

No dose change usually needed.

Children

Children get weight-based doses (about 8 mg per kg per day) as syrup or dispersible tablets, prescribed by a doctor.

Missed dose

Take it as soon as you remember, then keep about 12 hours between doses. Do not take two together.

Interactions

  • Warfarin – bleeding risk may increase.
  • Probenecid – raises cefixime levels.
  • Carbamazepine – levels may rise.
  • Oral contraceptive pills – effectiveness can fall if you get vomiting or diarrhoea; use extra precautions.
  • Live typhoid vaccine (oral) – antibiotics can make it ineffective.

Frequently asked questions

Taxim-O 200 before or after food?

Either, but taking it after food reduces nausea. Keep roughly 12 hours between the two daily doses.

Can I take Taxim-O 200 with alcohol?

There is no dangerous interaction, but alcohol worsens stomach side effects and slows recovery. Avoid it during the course.

Is Taxim-O 200 good for typhoid?

Cefixime is one of the oral antibiotics doctors use for uncomplicated typhoid in India, usually for 10 to 14 days. Dose and duration must come from your doctor; never self-treat suspected typhoid.

Can I take Taxim-O 200 for cold and viral fever?

No. Antibiotics do not work on viruses, and cefixime is a Schedule H1 drug in India, meaning the chemist must record your prescription. Misuse drives antibiotic resistance.

Zifi 200 vs Taxim-O 200 – which is better?

Both are cefixime 200 mg and work the same. Choose by availability and price.

Can I take Dolo 650 with Taxim-O 200?

Yes. Paracetamol can be taken for fever alongside cefixime; there is no interaction.

Is Taxim-O 200 safe in pregnancy?

Cefixime is generally considered acceptable in pregnancy when needed. Take it only if your doctor prescribes it.

What is Schedule H1 and why does it matter for Taxim-O?

Schedule H1 is a stricter category under India's Drugs and Cosmetics Rules for certain antibiotics and other drugs. The chemist must keep a register with your name, the doctor's name and the quantity sold, and cannot sell it without a prescription.

Why do I get loose motions with cefixime?

Diarrhoea is the most common side effect because the antibiotic disturbs gut bacteria. Drink fluids and ORS. If stools are severe, watery or bloody, stop and see a doctor.
