Uses

  • Eczema and dermatitis – itchy, red, inflamed patches of skin.
  • Contact dermatitis from detergents, jewellery, cosmetics or plants.
  • Insect bite and sting reactions.
  • Mild psoriasis and itchy rashes in skin folds.
  • Nappy rash with inflammation, when a doctor advises it.

How to take it

Wash and dry the area, then apply a thin layer to the affected skin once or twice a day and rub in gently. A fingertip-length of cream covers an area about twice the size of your palm. Wash your hands afterwards unless you are treating them. Do not cover with a bandage or plaster unless told to. Use it for the shortest time that works – usually no more than 7 days without a doctor's review. If the rash is not better in a week, is spreading, weeping or crusting, see a doctor as it may be infected. Keep it away from the eyes, and do not use on the face, groin or on broken skin unless a doctor has prescribed it.

Side effects

Common

  • Mild burning or stinging when first applied.
  • Itching or a mild rash.
  • Thinning of the skin if used for long periods.
  • Lightening or darkening of skin colour at the site.
  • Stretch marks or visible tiny blood vessels with prolonged use.

Serious

Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.

  • Rash that worsens, spreads or becomes pus-filled (hidden infection).
  • Allergic reaction – severe swelling, widespread rash or breathlessness.
  • Blurred vision if it repeatedly gets into the eyes.
  • With heavy long-term use over large areas, especially in children: weight gain, puffiness and other signs of steroid absorption.

Safety information

Alcohol

Alcohol has no interaction with a skin cream.

Pregnancy

Can usually be used in pregnancy in small amounts for a short time; check with your doctor. If breastfeeding, do not apply on the breast, or wash it off before feeding.

Kidney problems

No effect on the kidneys at normal use.

Liver problems

No effect on the liver at normal use.

Children

Use in children under 10 only on a doctor's advice, for a few days at a time, on small areas. Children absorb more through the skin.

Missed dose

Apply it when you remember, then continue as usual. Do not apply extra to make up.

Interactions

  • Other steroid creams (clobetasol, betamethasone, mometasone) – do not layer them; use only one as prescribed.
  • Antifungal or antibiotic creams – apply at separate times if both are prescribed, or use the combination product your doctor chose.
  • Moisturisers – apply the moisturiser first, wait 15 to 30 minutes, then the hydrocortisone.
  • Medicine taken by mouth does not usually interact with a small amount of hydrocortisone cream.

Frequently asked questions

How many times a day should I apply Lycor cream?

Once or twice a day in a thin layer on the affected area only. More often does not work better and increases side effects.

Can I use hydrocortisone cream on my face?

Only if a doctor has told you to, and for a few days. Facial skin is thin and steroids can cause acne, thinning and redness. Never use it near the eyes.

How long can I use Cutisoft cream?

Usually up to 7 days. If the rash has not settled by then, stop and see a doctor rather than continuing on your own.

Can I use Lycor cream on a fungal infection or ringworm?

No. A steroid alone makes ringworm (daad) worse and spread, even though it feels less itchy at first. Fungal infections need an antifungal cream; see a doctor if unsure.

Is hydrocortisone cream safe in pregnancy?

Small amounts for a short time are generally considered safe, but check with your doctor first. Avoid large areas and long courses.

Can I use hydrocortisone 1% cream on my baby for nappy rash?

Only if a doctor or pharmacist advises it, and for a few days. Babies absorb more through the skin, and a barrier cream is usually the first step.

Hydrocortisone vs betamethasone cream – what is the difference?

Hydrocortisone 1% is a mild steroid suitable for mild rashes, children and delicate skin. Betamethasone and clobetasol are much stronger and are reserved for thick, stubborn patches under a doctor's care.

Can I put a bandage over hydrocortisone cream?

Not unless your doctor says so. Covering the area increases absorption and the risk of skin thinning.

Is hydrocortisone cream available without prescription in India?

Chemists usually sell it as a prescription item. Ask a pharmacist about the right product for your rash, and see a doctor if it is not improving in a week.
