Uses
- Low intake of B vitamins and zinc from a poor or restricted diet.
- Recovery after illness when food intake has been low.
- Mouth ulcers, a sore tongue or slow wound healing when a doctor links them to low B vitamins or zinc.
How to take it
Take one capsule or tablet a day after a meal with water, or as your doctor advises. Taking it after food reduces the nausea that zinc can cause. Use it for the period your doctor suggests rather than for months on end – the NHS advises not taking more than 25 mg of zinc a day from supplements unless a doctor advises it, and long-term excess zinc can lower copper and lead to anaemia. Do not add other zinc products or multivitamins without counting the total zinc. See a doctor if your symptoms do not settle in a few weeks.
Side effects
Common
- Nausea or stomach upset, especially on an empty stomach.
- Bright yellow urine from riboflavin (vitamin B2) – harmless.
- Metallic taste.
Serious
Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.
- Vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhoea from too much zinc – usually within hours of a large dose.
- Tiredness, paleness or weakness after long-term use – excess zinc can cause copper deficiency and anaemia.
- Allergic reaction – rash, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing.
Safety information
Alcohol
Heavy drinking lowers B vitamins and zinc; cut down rather than relying on a supplement.
Pregnancy
Use in pregnancy only as your doctor advises, and check the folic acid and zinc you already get from pregnancy supplements.
Kidney problems
Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease before taking mineral supplements.
Liver problems
Usually safe at label doses; tell your doctor if you have liver disease.
Children
Not for children unless a doctor advises it; children's zinc and vitamin needs are lower and keep all supplements out of reach.
Missed dose
Take the next dose at the usual time. Do not take two to make up.
Interactions
- Ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, ofloxacin and other quinolone antibiotics – zinc reduces their absorption; take the antibiotic at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after.
- Doxycycline and other tetracycline antibiotics – take them at a separate time from mineral supplements.
- Other zinc products, multivitamins and Zincovit – risk of going above safe zinc limits.
- Epilepsy medicines (phenytoin, phenobarbital, primidone) – may not mix well with folic acid in these products; tell your doctor.
Frequently asked questions
Becosules Z capsule uses
Becosules Z contains B-complex vitamins, vitamin C, folic acid, biotin and zinc. It is used to make up for low B-vitamin and zinc intake, for example during recovery from illness or with a poor diet.
Becosules vs Becosules Z – what is the difference?
Becosules Z has the same vitamins as Becosules plus zinc sulphate (15 mg elemental zinc per capsule). Choose Z only if your doctor wants you to take zinc as well.
Becozinc capsule uses
Becozinc combines B vitamins and vitamin C with zinc. It is used for low intake of these nutrients. It is not a treatment for any specific disease.
Can I take Becosules Z daily for a long time?
Take it for the period your doctor suggests. Long-term extra zinc can reduce copper in the body and lead to anaemia and weak bones.
Becosules Z before or after food?
After a meal. Zinc on an empty stomach often causes nausea.
Does Becosules Z help hair fall and pimples?
Biotin deficiency can cause hair loss and skin rashes, but there is no good evidence that this supplement helps people who are not deficient. See a dermatologist for ongoing hair fall or acne.
Can I take Becosules Z with antibiotics?
Yes, but keep them apart. Zinc reduces absorption of antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin and doxycycline; take the antibiotic at least 2 hours before the capsule.
Is Becosules Z safe in pregnancy?
Only as your doctor advises. Your pregnancy supplements may already contain folic acid and zinc.
