Uses

  • Chest infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia.
  • Ear, nose, throat and sinus infections, including tonsillitis.
  • Dental abscesses and gum infections.
  • Urinary tract infections.
  • Helicobacter pylori stomach ulcers, in combination with other medicines.

How to take it

The usual adult dose is one 500 mg capsule three times a day, spaced evenly – for example morning, mid-afternoon and bedtime. Swallow the capsule whole with water, with or without food. Finish the whole course your doctor prescribed, usually 5 to 7 days, even if you feel better after two or three days; stopping early lets the infection come back and breeds resistant bacteria. If you are not improving after 3 days, or you get severe diarrhoea or a rash, tell your doctor.

Side effects

Common

  • Nausea.
  • Diarrhoea.
  • Skin rash.

Serious

Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.

  • Severe allergic reaction – swelling of the lips or throat, breathing difficulty, hives. Call for emergency help.
  • Diarrhoea with blood or mucus, or severe watery diarrhoea – possible gut infection; stop and see a doctor.
  • Yellow eyes or skin, dark urine or pale stools – liver problems.
  • A rash with circular red patches and fever, or a delayed rash 7 to 12 days later with joint pain – see a doctor.

Safety information

Alcohol

Alcohol does not react with amoxicillin, but it slows recovery and worsens nausea. It is best avoided until the course is over.

Pregnancy

Amoxicillin is one of the antibiotics considered safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Still tell your doctor so the choice is confirmed for you.

Kidney problems

Tell your doctor about kidney disease; the dose or gap between doses may need to be reduced.

Liver problems

Tell your doctor about any liver problem. Liver inflammation is a rare side effect.

Children

Widely used in children, but the dose is worked out by weight and usually given as syrup or dispersible tablet. The 500 mg capsule is an adult dose.

Missed dose

Take it as soon as you remember unless the next dose is nearly due – then skip it. Never take two doses together.

Interactions

  • Warfarin – bleeding risk can rise; INR may need checking.
  • Methotrexate – levels can rise.
  • Allopurinol and probenecid (gout medicines) – more rashes, higher amoxicillin levels.
  • Other antibiotics such as doxycycline – can reduce how well amoxicillin works; take only as a doctor combines them.
  • Oral contraceptive pills – very small chance of reduced effect if you have vomiting or diarrhoea; use extra protection during the course.

Frequently asked questions

Mox 500 before or after food?

Either. Amoxicillin is absorbed well with or without food. If it upsets your stomach, take it after a meal.

Mox 500 vs Augmentin 625 – what is the difference?

Mox contains only amoxicillin 500 mg. Augmentin 625 is amoxicillin 500 mg plus clavulanic acid 125 mg, which blocks the enzyme some bacteria use to resist amoxicillin. Your doctor picks based on the infection; Augmentin causes more diarrhoea.

Can I take Mox 500 with alcohol?

There is no dangerous interaction, but alcohol worsens nausea, dehydrates you and slows recovery. It is sensible to avoid it until the course is finished.

How many days should I take amoxicillin?

Most courses are 5 to 7 days, sometimes longer for dental or chest infections. Finish every capsule even if you feel better – stopping early can let the infection return.

What if I am allergic to penicillin?

Do not take amoxicillin – it is a penicillin. Tell every doctor and chemist about the allergy. A rash, itching, swelling or breathing trouble after a dose needs urgent medical attention.

Is Mox 500 safe in pregnancy?

Yes, amoxicillin is among the antibiotics generally considered safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding, when prescribed by a doctor for a bacterial infection.

Can I take amoxicillin for a cold, viral fever or dengue?

No. Colds, flu and dengue are viral and antibiotics do nothing for them except cause side effects and resistance. Take amoxicillin only when a doctor confirms a bacterial infection.

Is amoxicillin available without prescription in India?

Amoxicillin is a Schedule H antibiotic, so a chemist should sell it only against a prescription. Amoxicillin capsules are also sold as generics at Jan Aushadhi stores.

Why do I get loose motions on amoxicillin?

Antibiotics disturb the normal gut bacteria, so mild diarrhoea is common. Drink plenty of fluids and consider curd or a probiotic. Severe, watery or bloody diarrhoea needs a doctor.
