Uses

  • Epilepsy – certain types of seizures and fits, often alongside other anti-epileptic medicines.
  • Panic disorder and severe anxiety, for short periods.
  • Involuntary muscle spasms and movement disorders.
  • Restless legs syndrome, when a doctor prescribes it.

How to take it

Take clonazepam exactly as prescribed, usually starting with a low dose at night and increasing slowly over 2 to 4 weeks if needed. Swallow with water, with or without food; mouth-dissolving (MD) tablets are placed on the tongue with dry hands and dissolve without water. Clonazepam can be habit-forming, so your doctor will review you regularly and, if you have been on it for more than a few weeks, reduce the dose gradually rather than stopping suddenly. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how drowsy it makes you.

Side effects

Common

  • Drowsiness and tiredness, especially at first.
  • Dizziness, unsteadiness or poor coordination.
  • Difficulty concentrating or remembering.
  • Muscle weakness.

Serious

Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.

  • Slow or shallow breathing, extreme sleepiness or becoming unresponsive – emergency, especially if taken with alcohol or opioids.
  • Mood changes, depression, agitation, thoughts of self-harm.
  • Withdrawal fits, severe anxiety, shaking or sleeplessness if stopped suddenly.
  • Serious allergic reaction – swelling of the face, lips or throat.

Safety information

Alcohol

Do not drink alcohol. Alcohol with clonazepam causes deep sedation and can dangerously slow your breathing.

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to be. Clonazepam is avoided in pregnancy where possible, and if used near delivery the baby may be drowsy or have withdrawal. It passes into breast milk.

Kidney problems

Tell your doctor about kidney disease; a lower dose may be used.

Liver problems

Avoid in severe liver disease; in milder liver problems your doctor will use a lower dose.

Children

Used in children with epilepsy only under a specialist, with doses based on age and weight.

Missed dose

Take it as soon as you remember unless your next dose is nearly due – then skip it. Never take two doses together.

Interactions

  • Opioid painkillers (tramadol, codeine), sleeping pills (zolpidem) and other benzodiazepines (alprazolam) – added sedation and breathing risk.
  • Alcohol – avoid completely.
  • Other epilepsy medicines (phenytoin, carbamazepine, valproate) – levels can change; your neurologist will adjust doses.
  • Antidepressants, antipsychotics and antihistamines (cetirizine, chlorpheniramine) – more drowsiness.
  • Antifungals and antibiotics such as ketoconazole and clarithromycin – can raise clonazepam levels.

Frequently asked questions

Is Clonotril 0.5 a sleeping pill?

No. Clonazepam is prescribed for epilepsy, panic disorder and muscle spasms. It does make you drowsy, but it should not be used simply as a sleeping tablet because it is habit-forming.

Can I take Lonazep 0.5 with alcohol?

No. Alcohol with clonazepam causes heavy sedation and can slow your breathing to a dangerous level. Avoid alcohol completely while you take it.

Is Clonotril 0.5 addictive?

Clonazepam can cause dependence, particularly if taken for more than a few weeks. That is why doctors prescribe the lowest dose for the shortest time and taper it slowly when stopping.

Lonazep 0.5 vs Lonazep MD 0.5 – what is the difference?

Both contain 0.5 mg clonazepam. The MD (mouth-dissolving) tablet melts on the tongue without water, which is handy during a panic attack or for people who cannot swallow tablets. The effect is the same.

Can I stop Clonotril 0.5 suddenly?

No. Stopping suddenly after regular use can cause withdrawal – severe anxiety, shaking, sleeplessness and even seizures. Your doctor will reduce the dose step by step.

Can I drive after taking clonazepam 0.5?

Not until you know how it affects you. Clonazepam causes drowsiness, slow reactions and poor coordination, especially in the first weeks and after a dose increase.

Is clonazepam 0.5 safe in pregnancy?

It is generally avoided in pregnancy unless the benefit clearly outweighs the risk, for example in uncontrolled epilepsy. Tell your doctor as soon as you know you are pregnant – do not stop it on your own.

Does Clonotril 0.5 need a prescription in India?

Yes. Clonazepam is a Schedule H prescription medicine and the chemist must keep a record of the sale. It should only be taken under a doctor's supervision.
