Uses

  • Short-term relief of anxiety disorders and severe anxiety.
  • Panic disorder, with or without fear of open or crowded places.
  • Anxiety linked with depression, as part of a treatment plan.
  • Short-term help with anxiety-related sleep disturbance.

How to take it

Take it exactly as prescribed, usually 0.25 mg two or three times a day, or once at bedtime if your doctor has prescribed it for sleep. Swallow with water, with or without food. Your doctor will start with the lowest dose and increase only if needed. Alprazolam works within an hour and can make you drowsy, so avoid driving until you know how it affects you. It is intended for short courses – usually a few weeks – because the body gets used to it and it can become habit-forming. Do not stop suddenly after regular use; your doctor will reduce the dose gradually to avoid withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, shaking, poor sleep and, rarely, seizures.

Side effects

Common

  • Drowsiness, tiredness.
  • Dizziness or light-headedness.
  • Poor coordination or unsteadiness.
  • Memory problems, difficulty concentrating.
  • Dry mouth, constipation.

Serious

Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.

  • Slow or shallow breathing, extreme sleepiness or unresponsiveness – emergency, especially with alcohol or opioids.
  • Confusion, hallucinations or unusual behaviour, including agitation or aggression.
  • Seizures, severe anxiety or shaking when doses are missed or stopped suddenly (withdrawal).
  • Serious allergic reaction – swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing.

Safety information

Alcohol

Do not drink alcohol. The combination causes deep sedation and can dangerously slow breathing.

Pregnancy

Avoid in pregnancy, especially the first and last trimesters, unless a specialist advises; the newborn can have breathing problems and withdrawal. Not recommended while breastfeeding.

Kidney problems

Tell your doctor about kidney disease; use with caution.

Liver problems

A lower dose is used in liver disease; avoid in severe liver impairment.

Children

Not for use in children or teenagers. Older adults should take lower doses because of falls and confusion.

Missed dose

Take it as soon as you remember unless the next dose is nearly due – then skip it. Never take two doses together.

Interactions

  • Opioid painkillers (tramadol, codeine, morphine) – dangerous drowsiness and slowed breathing.
  • Sleeping pills (zolpidem), other benzodiazepines (clonazepam, diazepam), sedating antihistamines and antidepressants – added sedation.
  • Ketoconazole, itraconazole, clarithromycin, ritonavir and grapefruit juice – raise alprazolam levels; some combinations are avoided.
  • Cimetidine and some acidity medicines – may raise alprazolam levels.
  • Carbamazepine, phenytoin, rifampicin and St John's wort – lower its effect.

Frequently asked questions

What is Alprax 0.25 used for?

Alprax 0.25 contains alprazolam 0.25 mg, a benzodiazepine. It is prescribed for short-term relief of anxiety and panic disorder, and sometimes at bedtime for anxiety-related sleep problems.

Alprax 0.25 vs Alprax 0.5 – which should I take?

0.25 mg is the usual starting dose; 0.5 mg is used if anxiety is not controlled. Only your doctor should change the dose, because higher doses increase drowsiness and dependence risk.

Is Alprax habit-forming?

Yes. Alprazolam can cause dependence within weeks of regular use, and stopping suddenly causes withdrawal – rebound anxiety, shaking, insomnia and rarely seizures. That is why it is a Schedule H1 drug in India and meant for short courses.

Can I take Alprax 0.25 with alcohol?

No. Alcohol and alprazolam together cause heavy sedation and can slow breathing to a dangerous level.

How long does Restyl 0.25 take to work?

It starts working within about 30 to 60 minutes and the effect lasts several hours. Because it acts fast, doctors may use it while slower-acting medicines like SSRIs take effect.

Can I take Alprax every night for sleep?

Not long term. Nightly use quickly leads to tolerance and dependence. If sleep problems persist, the cause needs assessment – anxiety, depression, sleep hygiene – rather than continued alprazolam.

Is Alprax available without prescription in India?

No. Alprazolam is a Schedule H1 medicine – it needs a valid prescription and the chemist must record the sale in a register.

Can I drive after taking Alprax 0.25?

Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you. Alprazolam slows reaction time and causes drowsiness, especially in the first days and at higher doses.

How do I stop Alprax safely?

After short courses, your doctor may stop it straight away. After regular use for more than a few weeks, the dose is reduced gradually over weeks to avoid withdrawal. Never stop suddenly on your own.
