Uses

  • Male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) – thinning on the crown and top of the scalp.
  • Female pattern hair thinning, when a dermatologist prescribes the 5% strength.
  • Supporting hair regrowth after certain types of temporary hair loss, under a doctor's advice.

How to take it

Apply 1 ml (about 20 drops, or the pump doses your product specifies) to the dry scalp twice a day, morning and night, spreading it over the thinning area with the dropper or your fingertips and letting it dry naturally. Wash your hands after use. Do not use more than directed – extra does not speed up regrowth but increases side effects. Do not apply on a sunburnt, broken or irritated scalp, and keep it away from the eyes. Expect to use it for at least 4 months, often up to a year, before you can judge the result. Regrowth lasts only while you keep using it; most new hair is lost within a few months of stopping. See a dermatologist if hair loss is patchy, sudden, or comes with scalp pain or scaling, as it may have another cause.

Side effects

Common

  • Itching, dryness, flaking or burning of the scalp.
  • Temporary increase in hair shedding in the first few weeks.
  • Unwanted hair growth on the face or forehead if the solution runs down.
  • Headache.

Serious

Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.

  • Fast heartbeat, chest pain, dizziness or fainting – stop and see a doctor.
  • Swelling of the face, hands, ankles or sudden weight gain.
  • Difficulty breathing, especially when lying down.
  • Severe scalp irritation or allergic rash.

Safety information

Alcohol

Drinking alcohol does not interact with topical minoxidil. The solution itself contains alcohol and can sting or dry the scalp.

Pregnancy

Not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Tell your doctor if you become pregnant while using it.

Kidney problems

Very little is absorbed, but tell your doctor if you have kidney disease.

Liver problems

No dose change is expected, but tell your doctor about liver disease.

Children

Not for children under 18 unless a dermatologist prescribes it.

Missed dose

Skip the missed application and carry on with the next one. Do not apply double.

Interactions

  • Other scalp products – steroid lotions, retinoids or petroleum jelly – can increase absorption; use them at different times or as your doctor says.
  • Blood pressure medicines – minoxidil can rarely add to their effect and cause dizziness.
  • Topical finasteride combinations – only use together on a dermatologist's advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is Mintop Forte 5% used for?

Mintop Forte contains minoxidil 5%, applied to the scalp to slow hair loss and regrow hair in male pattern baldness. It works on the crown and top of the head; it does not restore a receding hairline much.

Mintop 2% vs Mintop Forte 5% – which one should I use?

5% is the usual strength for men and works better than 2%. Women are often started on 2% because 5% can cause unwanted facial hair; a dermatologist may still prescribe 5% for women.

How long does Tugain 5% take to show results?

At least 4 months of twice-daily use, and up to a year, before you can judge. Many people shed more hair in the first 2 to 6 weeks – this is expected and usually settles.

Will my hair fall out if I stop Tugain?

Yes. Minoxidil only works while you use it. Most new hair is lost within a few months of stopping, so it is a long-term commitment.

Can I use Mintop Forte once a day instead of twice?

Twice a day is the studied dose. Once-daily use works less well; if you cannot manage twice daily, ask your dermatologist about foam or a different plan rather than applying double.

Does minoxidil cause hair on the face?

It can, if the solution runs down the forehead or you touch your face without washing your hands. Apply to the dry scalp only and wash your hands after each use.

Can women use Tugain 5%?

Only on a dermatologist's advice, and not in pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Women are more prone to unwanted facial hair with the 5% strength.

Can I use Mintop Forte with finasteride?

Yes, dermatologists often combine topical minoxidil with finasteride tablets in men, as they work in different ways. Finasteride needs a prescription and is not for women of child-bearing age.

Is Mintop Forte available without a prescription?

Minoxidil solution is dispensed widely at chemists, but it is best started after a dermatologist confirms the type of hair loss, since patchy or sudden hair loss has other causes.
