Uses
- Depression (major depressive disorder).
- Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) in adults and children aged 6 and over.
- Panic disorder and social anxiety disorder.
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
- Premenstrual dysphoric disorder, on a specialist's advice.
How to take it
Take one tablet once a day, morning or evening, at the same time each day, with or without food – taking it with food can reduce nausea. Your doctor may start with a lower dose and increase it after a week or more. It usually takes a few weeks to feel the benefit; treatment for depression often continues for several months after you feel well. Do not stop suddenly – your doctor will reduce the dose gradually to avoid withdrawal symptoms such as dizziness, irritability and flu-like feelings. Contact your doctor straight away if you feel worse or have thoughts of harming yourself, particularly in the first few weeks.

Safety information
Alcohol
Best avoided – alcohol can stop the medicine working properly and worsens drowsiness.
Pregnancy
Can be used in pregnancy if needed at the lowest effective dose; often continued while breastfeeding as only small amounts pass into milk. Discuss with your doctor.
Kidney problems
No dose change usually needed, but tell your doctor about kidney disease.
Liver problems
A lower dose or less frequent dosing is used if you have liver disease.
Children
Prescribed for OCD from age 6 and sometimes for severe depression in teenagers, under a child psychiatrist only.
Missed dose
Skip the missed dose and take the next one at the usual time. Never take two doses together.
Interactions
- MAOI antidepressants, linezolid and methylene blue – dangerous serotonin syndrome; must be separated by two weeks.
- Tramadol, sumatriptan, lithium and other antidepressants – added serotonin effect; only on a doctor's advice.
- Warfarin, apixaban, aspirin, clopidogrel and NSAIDs like ibuprofen – increase bleeding risk.
- Pimozide must not be combined; some antipsychotics and antiarrhythmics need caution for heart rhythm.
- St John's wort should be avoided, and grapefruit juice can raise sertraline levels.
Frequently asked questions
What is Zosert 50 used for?
Zosert 50 contains sertraline 50 mg, an SSRI antidepressant. It is prescribed for depression, OCD, panic disorder, social anxiety and PTSD.
How long does Serlift 50 take to work?
Sleep, appetite and energy may improve in the first couple of weeks, but mood usually takes several weeks to lift. Keep taking it and report how you feel at follow-up rather than stopping early.
Should I take sertraline in the morning or at night?
Either, as long as it is the same time each day. If it makes you drowsy, take it at night; if it disturbs sleep, take it in the morning.
Can I take Zosert 50 with alcohol?
It is best avoided. Alcohol can stop sertraline working properly and worsens drowsiness and low mood.
Daxid vs Zosert – is there a difference?
Both contain sertraline 50 mg from different manufacturers. They work the same way; stick with one brand unless your doctor changes it.
Does sertraline cause weight gain?
Some people gain weight over months; others lose appetite initially. If weight change is troubling, discuss it with your doctor – do not stop on your own.
Can I stop Zosert once I feel better?
No. Stopping too early makes relapse likely, and stopping suddenly causes withdrawal effects. Doctors usually continue for several months after recovery and then taper gradually.
Is Zosert safe in pregnancy?
Sertraline is one of the better-studied antidepressants in pregnancy and breastfeeding and can be continued when needed, at the lowest effective dose. Discuss with your psychiatrist and obstetrician.
Can I take painkillers with sertraline?
Paracetamol is fine. Ibuprofen, diclofenac and aspirin increase bleeding risk with SSRIs; tramadol can cause serotonin syndrome. Ask your doctor before using them.
Is sertraline habit-forming?
No. It does not cause addiction, although stopping suddenly causes withdrawal symptoms. Clonazepam or alprazolam sometimes given alongside are the habit-forming medicines.
