Uses

  • Skin and soft tissue infections such as abscesses, boils and infected wounds.
  • Dental infections and bone or joint infections.
  • Chest, pelvic and other serious bacterial infections, often in people allergic to penicillin.
  • Severe acne when other treatments fail, under a dermatologist.
  • Sometimes with other drugs for malaria or toxoplasmosis.

How to take it

Take one 300 mg capsule three or four times a day at evenly spaced times, exactly as prescribed. Swallow it whole with a full glass of water and stay upright for at least 30 minutes afterwards to prevent it irritating the food pipe. It can be taken with or without food; food may reduce stomach upset. Finish the full course even if you feel better – stopping early lets the infection return and breeds resistance. See a doctor if you are not improving within a few days, or if you get watery or bloody diarrhoea during or even weeks after the course.

Side effects

Common

  • Nausea, vomiting or stomach discomfort.
  • Unpleasant or metallic taste.
  • Mild diarrhoea.
  • Vaginal itching or discharge (thrush).
  • Joint pain.

Serious

Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.

  • Severe watery or bloody diarrhoea with cramps or fever – can be a dangerous bowel infection (colitis), even months after stopping; see a doctor urgently.
  • Allergic reaction – rash, hives, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing.
  • Skin peeling or blistering.
  • Yellow skin or eyes, or passing much less urine.

Safety information

Alcohol

There is no direct interaction, but avoid alcohol while you have an infection; it worsens nausea and dehydration.

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Clindamycin is used in pregnancy when needed, but only on a doctor's decision.

Kidney problems

Tell your doctor about kidney disease; monitoring may be needed on long courses.

Liver problems

Tell your doctor about liver disease; liver tests may be checked during longer treatment.

Children

Used in children at weight-based doses prescribed by a doctor; capsules are for those who can swallow them safely.

Missed dose

Take it as soon as you remember, unless the next dose is nearly due – then skip it. Do not double up.

Interactions

  • Muscle relaxants used in surgery – clindamycin can strengthen their effect; tell the anaesthetist.
  • Erythromycin or azithromycin – work against clindamycin; usually not combined.
  • Warfarin – bleeding risk may rise; INR may need checking.
  • Anti-diarrhoeal medicines like loperamide – do not use for antibiotic-related diarrhoea without medical advice.
  • Tell your doctor about every other medicine, because doses or monitoring may need to change.

Frequently asked questions

What is Dalacin C 300 used for?

It is an antibiotic for skin, soft tissue, dental, bone and some pelvic and chest infections, and is often chosen for people allergic to penicillin. It does not work for colds or viral fevers.

Dalacin C 300 before or after food?

Either, but take it with a full glass of water and stay upright for 30 minutes so the capsule does not irritate the food pipe. Taking it with food can reduce nausea.

Can I take Dalacin C 300 with alcohol?

There is no direct interaction, but alcohol worsens nausea and dehydration and slows recovery, so it is best avoided during the course.

Why does clindamycin cause diarrhoea?

Like all antibiotics it disturbs gut bacteria. Mild diarrhoea is common, but watery or bloody diarrhoea with cramps or fever can be a serious bowel infection and needs a doctor immediately, even if it starts weeks after the course.

Is Dalacin C safe in pregnancy?

It is used in pregnancy when a doctor decides it is needed. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before starting.

How many days should I take Clindasure 300?

For as long as your doctor prescribed – often 7 to 10 days for skin infections, longer for bone infections. Finish the full course even if you feel well.

Is Dalacin C the same as clindamycin gel for acne?

Both contain clindamycin, but the gel is applied to the skin for mild acne, while the 300 mg capsule is an oral antibiotic for infections or severe acne under a dermatologist.

Does Dalacin C 300 need a prescription?

Yes. Clindamycin is a Schedule H antibiotic in India and should be dispensed only against a doctor's prescription.
