Uses
- Fungal nail infections of the toenails and fingernails.
- Ringworm of the body, groin (jock itch) and scalp that has not cleared with creams.
- Athlete's foot and widespread fungal skin infections, when tablets are needed.
How to take it
Take one 250 mg tablet once a day, with or without food, at about the same time each day. Skin infections usually need 2 to 6 weeks, fingernail infections about 6 weeks and toenail infections about 12 weeks; complete the whole course even if the skin looks better, because the fungus takes time to clear and a healthy nail takes months to grow out. Your doctor may check your liver with a blood test before and during treatment. Stop and see a doctor immediately if you develop yellow eyes, dark urine, pale stools, severe stomach pain or a spreading rash.

Safety information

Pregnancy
Not recommended in pregnancy unless clearly necessary. Do not breastfeed while taking it as it passes into breast milk.
Kidney problems
Tell your doctor about kidney disease; it is usually avoided if kidney function is significantly reduced.
Liver problems
Not for people with existing liver disease. Liver blood tests may be done before and during treatment.
Children
Used in children only on a specialist's advice, at a weight-based dose.
Missed dose
Take it as soon as you remember if the next dose is more than 4 hours away; otherwise skip it. Never take a double dose.
Interactions
- Cimetidine – raises terbinafine levels.
- Rifampicin – lowers terbinafine levels so it may not work.
- Antidepressants such as amitriptyline, nortriptyline, fluoxetine and paroxetine – terbinafine can raise their levels.
- Beta-blockers like metoprolol, propranolol – levels may rise.
- Warfarin – rarely alters bleeding tendency; INR may be checked.
Frequently asked questions
How long should I take Terbicip 250 for ringworm?
Skin ringworm usually needs 2 to 4 weeks of tablets; stubborn or widespread infections may need up to 6 weeks. Finish the course your doctor sets even if the rash fades sooner.
How long does Sebifin take to cure nail fungus?
Fingernails usually need 6 weeks and toenails 12 weeks of tablets. The nail looks normal only after the healthy nail grows out, which can take several more months.
Terbicip before or after food?
Either is fine. Take it at the same time each day; if it upsets your stomach, take it after a meal.
Can I take Terbicip 250 with alcohol?
Keep alcohol to a minimum. Terbinafine can affect the liver, and alcohol adds to that strain.
Does Terbicip affect the liver?
Rarely, terbinafine can cause serious liver problems. Your doctor may test your liver before and during treatment. Stop and seek help if you notice yellow eyes, dark urine or pale stools.
Why has my sense of taste changed on Sebifin?
Loss or change of taste is a known side effect of terbinafine. It usually returns to normal after stopping, but tell your doctor if it is troublesome or persists.
Is Terbicip safe in pregnancy?
It is not recommended in pregnancy unless clearly needed, and it should not be taken while breastfeeding. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to be.
Terbinafine tablet vs cream – which is better?
Creams work for small patches of skin infection. Tablets are needed for nail infections, scalp ringworm and widespread or repeated skin infections that creams have not cleared.
Is Terbicip available without prescription?
No. Terbinafine tablets are Schedule H in India and need a doctor's prescription, partly because liver monitoring may be required.
