Uses
- High blood pressure (hypertension) – lowers the risk of heart attack, stroke and kidney damage.
- Preventing angina (chest pain from the heart) attacks.
- Often combined with other blood pressure medicines such as telmisartan or metoprolol when one tablet is not enough.
How to take it
Take one 10 mg tablet once a day, at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow it with water. Doctors usually start with 5 mg and move up to 10 mg if the blood pressure is still high; do not change the dose yourself. Amlodipine is a long-term medicine – keep taking it even when you feel well, because high blood pressure has no symptoms. Do not stop suddenly without talking to your doctor, and check your BP regularly.
Side effects

Safety information
Alcohol
Limit alcohol. It can drop your blood pressure further and make dizziness worse.
Pregnancy
Not usually recommended in pregnancy because safer BP medicines exist; your doctor may use it if those do not suit you. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Kidney problems
Amlodipine can be used in kidney disease and the dose usually does not need changing, but tell your doctor so your kidney function can be monitored.
Liver problems
If you have liver disease your doctor may start at a lower dose and increase slowly, because the medicine is cleared by the liver.
Children
Can be used in children over 6 with high blood pressure, only under a doctor's care at a lower dose.
Missed dose
If you forget a dose, skip it and take the next one at the usual time. Do not take two tablets to make up.
Interactions
- Simvastatin – high doses of this cholesterol tablet can build up; your doctor may limit it to 20 mg or switch to atorvastatin or rosuvastatin.
- Antifungals (fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole) and some antibiotics (clarithromycin, rifampicin) – can raise or lower amlodipine levels.
- Other blood pressure medicines – usually combined on purpose, but can drop BP too far; watch for dizziness.
- Ciclosporin, tacrolimus and some HIV medicines – levels can change.
- Grapefruit juice and St John's wort – avoid.
Frequently asked questions
Amlokind 10 morning or night?
Either, as long as it is the same time every day. Many doctors suggest the morning; if it makes you drowsy, taking it at night is fine. Do not switch back and forth.
Amlokind 5 vs Amlokind 10 – what is the difference?
Both contain amlodipine; 10 mg is double the strength. Most people start on 5 mg and are moved to 10 mg if the blood pressure target is not reached. Never double your own dose.
Can I take Amlokind 10 with alcohol?
Keep alcohol to a minimum. Alcohol lowers blood pressure further and can make you dizzy or faint, especially when standing up.
Why are my ankles swollen on amlodipine?
Ankle and foot swelling is the most common side effect of amlodipine, especially at the 10 mg dose. It is not a sign of kidney or heart trouble by itself, but tell your doctor – they may lower the dose or add another medicine.
Can I stop Stamlo 10 once my BP is normal?
No. Your blood pressure is normal because of the tablet. Stopping it lets the pressure rise again and can trigger angina. Only change or stop it on your doctor's advice.
Is amlodipine safe in pregnancy?
It is not usually the first choice in pregnancy; doctors prefer medicines like labetalol or nifedipine. Tell your doctor as soon as you know you are pregnant so your BP medicine can be reviewed.
Can amlodipine be taken with telmisartan?
Yes, this is a very common combination in India and is available as single tablets like Telma-AM. Your doctor will check that the combined effect does not drop your BP too low.
Can I take Stamlo 10 with atorvastatin?
Yes. Amlodipine interacts mainly with high-dose simvastatin, not atorvastatin or rosuvastatin. Tell your doctor which statin you are on.
Is amlodipine available at Jan Aushadhi?
Yes, amlodipine 10 mg tablets are available as generics at Jan Aushadhi kendras. It is also a Schedule H medicine, so you need a prescription.
