Uses

  • High blood pressure (hypertension).
  • Angina – chest pain from narrowed heart arteries, to prevent attacks.
  • Coronary artery disease, to reduce the need for hospitalisation and procedures, as decided by a doctor.

How to take it

Take one 5 mg tablet once a day at the same time each day, with or without food, with water. It may take 1 to 2 weeks to see the full effect on BP. Do not stop suddenly, especially if you take it for angina, as chest pain may worsen.

Side effects

Common

  • Swelling of the ankles and feet.
  • Headache, flushing.
  • Dizziness, tiredness.
  • Palpitations.
  • Nausea, stomach pain.

Serious

Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.

  • Chest pain that gets worse or a heart attack when starting or increasing the dose (rare, in people with severe heart disease).
  • Very low blood pressure, fainting.
  • Severe allergic reaction with swelling of the face or throat.
  • Yellow skin or eyes (liver problems, rare).

Safety information

Alcohol

Alcohol can add to the blood pressure-lowering effect and cause dizziness. Keep it moderate.

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Amlodipine is sometimes used in pregnancy when the benefit outweighs the risk; other medicines may be preferred.

Kidney problems

No dose change usually needed; kidney disease does not affect amlodipine much.

Liver problems

Your doctor may start with a lower dose (2.5 mg) if you have liver disease, because amlodipine is cleared by the liver.

Children

Can be used in children 6 years and above for high blood pressure under a doctor's care.

Missed dose

Take it as soon as you remember unless the next dose is within 12 hours; then skip it. Do not double up.

Interactions

  • Grapefruit juice – can raise amlodipine levels; avoid large amounts.
  • Simvastatin – amlodipine raises its levels; simvastatin dose is usually limited to 20 mg.
  • Ketoconazole, itraconazole, clarithromycin, ritonavir – can increase amlodipine levels and lower BP too much.
  • Rifampicin, carbamazepine – can reduce amlodipine's effect.
  • Other BP medicines – additive effect; dizziness on standing.
  • Ciclosporin, tacrolimus – levels may change.

Frequently asked questions

Amlong 5 morning or night?

Either, as long as it is the same time every day. Amlodipine lasts 24 hours. Some doctors suggest night-time dosing; follow your prescription.

Can I take Amlong 5 with alcohol?

Alcohol can lower BP further and cause dizziness or flushing. Keep it moderate and avoid it when you first start.

Why are my ankles swelling on Amlong?

Ankle swelling is the best-known side effect of amlodipine, caused by widening of small blood vessels. Raising your legs helps; if it is troublesome, your doctor may lower the dose or change the medicine.

Can I take Amlong 5 on an empty stomach?

Yes, with or without food.

Is Amlong 5 safe in pregnancy?

Only under your doctor's advice. Other BP medicines are usually preferred in pregnancy, but amlodipine is sometimes used when needed.

Can I stop Amlong 5 when my BP is normal?

No. Your BP is normal because of the medicine. Stopping it suddenly can let BP rise and worsen angina. Talk to your doctor before any change.

Amlong 5 vs Telma 40 – which is better?

They are different classes – amlodipine relaxes blood vessels while telmisartan blocks a hormone that narrows them. Neither is "better"; the choice depends on your age, kidneys, diabetes and side effects. They are often combined.

Does Amlong 5 need a prescription?

Yes. Amlodipine is a Schedule H medicine in India and is sold against a prescription.
