Frequently asked questions
What is Warf 5 used for?
Warf 5 is warfarin 5 mg, an oral blood thinner. It is used to treat and prevent blood clots in the legs and lungs, to prevent stroke in atrial fibrillation, and to protect mechanical heart valves.
What is INR and why do I need it checked?
INR measures how long your blood takes to clot. Warfarin's dose is adjusted to keep INR in a target range (often 2 to 3). Too low means clot risk; too high means bleeding risk. Tests are frequent at first and then every few weeks.
Can I take Warf 5 with alcohol?
Avoid heavy drinking and binges – they can push your INR up and cause bleeding. If your doctor agrees, a small, regular amount is less risky than occasional heavy drinking.
What foods should I avoid with warfarin?
You do not have to avoid green vegetables, but keep your intake of vitamin K foods (spinach, methi, broccoli, cabbage) steady from week to week. Avoid cranberry and grapefruit juice and sudden big changes in diet.
