Uses
- Preventing a second heart attack in people who have already had one.
- Keeping a coronary stent open after angioplasty – both medicines together are usually prescribed for a fixed period decided by your cardiologist.
- Reducing the risk of stroke or clots in people with blocked arteries (peripheral arterial disease) or unstable angina.
- Sometimes used to prevent clots in atrial fibrillation when stronger blood thinners are not suitable.
How to take it
Take one tablet (or capsule) once a day at the same time, swallowed whole with water, with or without food – many people take it after breakfast to reduce stomach upset from the aspirin part. Do not crush or chew it. Keep taking it for as long as your cardiologist has told you, even if you feel completely well; stopping early, especially after a stent, can cause a clot in the stent and a heart attack. Always tell your dentist or surgeon that you take it before any procedure – they may ask you to stop a few days before, but only on your doctor's advice. See a doctor straight away if you pass black stools, vomit blood or bleed for a long time from a cut.
Side effects
Common
- Bleeding more easily – nosebleeds, bleeding gums, bruising.
- Stomach pain, heartburn, nausea.
- Diarrhoea.
- Headache or dizziness.
Serious
Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.
- Black or bloody stools, or vomit that looks like coffee grounds – signs of stomach bleeding; go to a hospital.
- Signs of a severe allergic reaction – rash, swelling of the face or throat, wheezing (people with asthma or nasal polyps are more prone to aspirin allergy).
- Sudden weakness, slurred speech or vision loss – could be a stroke or a bleed in the brain.
- Fever, pale skin, yellowing of the eyes or unusual bruising – rare blood problems; see a doctor urgently.
Safety information
Alcohol
Alcohol with aspirin raises the risk of stomach bleeding. Keep it to a minimum, and ask your doctor if you drink regularly.
Pregnancy
Not usually used in pregnancy, especially after 20 weeks; tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Kidney problems
Tell your doctor about kidney disease – aspirin can affect the kidneys, and bleeding risk is higher.
Liver problems
Tell your doctor about liver disease; the combination is used with caution and your liver tests may be checked.
Children
Not for children or teenagers – aspirin is linked to Reye's syndrome, a rare but serious illness, especially during viral fevers.
Missed dose
Take it as soon as you remember unless the next dose is nearly due – then skip it. Never take two doses together.
Interactions
- Other blood thinners – warfarin, apixaban, rivaroxaban, heparin – greatly increase bleeding; only on a specialist's advice.
- Painkillers like ibuprofen, diclofenac and naproxen – raise stomach-bleeding risk and ibuprofen can blunt aspirin's effect; use paracetamol instead.
- Omeprazole and esomeprazole (Omez, Nexpro) can make clopidogrel work less well – pantoprazole or rabeprazole are usually preferred for stomach protection.
- SSRI antidepressants such as sertraline or escitalopram add to the bleeding risk.
- Some antifungals and HIV medicines change how clopidogrel is activated – tell your doctor about every medicine you take.
Frequently asked questions
What is Deplatt A 75 used for?
Deplatt A 75 combines aspirin 75 mg and clopidogrel 75 mg, two antiplatelet medicines that stop blood cells sticking together. It is prescribed after a heart attack or stent, and in people with blocked arteries, to prevent further clots.
How long do I need to take Deplatt A after a stent?
The duration is decided by your cardiologist – it may be several months to a year or longer. Do not stop on your own, because stopping early can cause a clot inside the stent and a heart attack.
Deplatt A 75 vs Ecosprin 75 – what is the difference?
Ecosprin 75 contains only aspirin. Deplatt A 75 contains both aspirin and clopidogrel, so it is a stronger antiplatelet combination used in the period after a heart attack or stent. Your doctor chooses based on your condition.
Can I take Deplatt A with Omez or Pan 40?
Omeprazole (Omez) and esomeprazole can reduce how well clopidogrel works. If you need stomach protection, doctors usually prefer pantoprazole (Pan 40) or rabeprazole. Ask your cardiologist before adding any acid medicine.
Should I stop Clopilet A before a tooth extraction or surgery?
Tell your dentist or surgeon that you take it. For minor dental work it is often continued; for bigger surgery your doctor may ask you to stop a few days before. Never stop it on your own, especially if you have a stent.
Can I take painkillers with Deplatt A 75?
Paracetamol is the safest choice. Avoid ibuprofen, diclofenac and other NSAIDs unless your doctor agrees, because they increase stomach bleeding and ibuprofen can interfere with aspirin.
Is bruising or bleeding gums normal on Deplatt A?
Minor bruising and slightly longer bleeding from cuts are expected. But black stools, blood in vomit or urine, or bleeding that does not stop needs urgent medical attention.
Can I drink alcohol while taking Deplatt A?
Alcohol increases the chance of stomach irritation and bleeding with aspirin. It is best avoided or kept very occasional, and only with your doctor's agreement.
Is Deplatt A 75 available without a prescription?
No. Aspirin + clopidogrel is a Schedule H medicine in India and chemists must see a doctor's prescription. It is also a medicine that needs regular follow-up, so do not self-medicate.
