Uses
- Preventing another heart attack or stroke in people who have already had one.
- After angioplasty or stent placement, often together with clopidogrel.
- Angina and other heart disease, to reduce clot risk.
- Preventing pre-eclampsia in pregnancy when a doctor prescribes it.
- Preventing clots in some people with peripheral artery disease.
How to take it
Take one 75 mg tablet once a day, at the same time each day, with or just after food to protect the stomach. Many Indian brands (such as Ecosprin) are enteric-coated – swallow them whole with water and do not crush or chew. Low-dose aspirin is usually taken long term, often for life, as part of heart protection; keep taking it unless your doctor tells you to stop. If you are having surgery or a tooth extraction, tell the doctor or dentist – they will advise whether to pause it. See a doctor for black or tarry stools, vomiting blood, or stomach pain that does not settle.
Side effects
Common
- Indigestion or stomach ache.
- Bleeding more easily – bruising, nosebleeds, longer bleeding from cuts.
- Mild nausea.
Serious
Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.
- Stomach ulcer or bleeding – black tarry stools, vomiting blood or coffee-ground material, severe stomach pain.
- Wheezing or breathlessness (aspirin-sensitive asthma).
- Serious allergic reaction – swelling of the face or throat, itchy raised rash, difficulty breathing.
- Any head injury with a severe headache – get checked.
Safety information
Alcohol
Limit alcohol; it irritates the stomach and raises the risk of bleeding with aspirin.
Pregnancy
Low-dose aspirin is prescribed in pregnancy to prevent pre-eclampsia and is usually continued until around 36 weeks. Do not take it in pregnancy without a doctor's advice. It is generally considered acceptable while breastfeeding at low dose – check with your doctor.
Kidney problems
Tell your doctor about kidney disease; aspirin may not be suitable in severe kidney impairment.
Liver problems
Caution in liver disease, which increases bleeding risk.
Children
Do not give aspirin to children under 16 for fever or pain because of Reye's syndrome, a rare but serious illness. Only specialists use low-dose aspirin in children (for example in Kawasaki disease).
Missed dose
Take it as soon as you remember unless the next dose is nearly due – then skip it. Never take two doses together.
Interactions
- Other blood thinners – warfarin, apixaban, rivaroxaban, clopidogrel – higher bleeding risk; only when a cardiologist prescribes the combination.
- Painkillers like ibuprofen, diclofenac, naproxen (NSAIDs) – raise the risk of stomach bleeding and ibuprofen can block aspirin's heart protection; paracetamol is safer.
- Steroids such as prednisolone – higher risk of stomach ulcers.
- SSRI antidepressants (sertraline, escitalopram) – increased bleeding.
- Methotrexate – aspirin raises its levels.
- Blood pressure medicines and diuretics – aspirin can slightly reduce their effect.
Frequently asked questions
What is Ecosprin 75 used for?
Ecosprin 75 contains low-dose aspirin 75 mg. It makes platelets less sticky and is used to prevent heart attack and stroke in people with heart disease, after a stent, and in some pregnancies to prevent pre-eclampsia.
Ecosprin 75 vs Ecosprin 150 – what is the difference?
Both are low-dose aspirin for heart protection; 75 mg is the usual maintenance dose and 150 mg is used in some patients, for example after a recent heart attack or stent, as the cardiologist decides. Neither is for pain relief.
Should Ecosprin 75 be taken before or after food?
After food, or with a meal, to reduce stomach irritation. Ecosprin is enteric-coated, so swallow it whole and do not crush or chew it.
Can I take Ecosprin 75 with alcohol?
Keep alcohol to a minimum. Both irritate the stomach lining, and together they raise the risk of stomach bleeding.
Can I take Ecosprin 75 if I am healthy, just to prevent a heart attack?
Not on your own. For people without heart disease, the bleeding risk of daily aspirin usually outweighs the benefit. It is prescribed only when a doctor judges your heart risk is high enough.
Can I take Dolo 650 or Combiflam with Ecosprin 75?
Paracetamol (Dolo) is fine. Avoid Combiflam, ibuprofen and other NSAIDs – they increase stomach bleeding and ibuprofen can block aspirin's protective effect.
Do I need to stop Ecosprin before surgery or tooth extraction?
Tell the surgeon or dentist. For many minor procedures aspirin is continued, especially after a stent, because stopping raises clot risk. Only stop it if the doctor who prescribed it agrees.
Is Ecosprin 75 safe in pregnancy?
Low-dose aspirin is prescribed in pregnancy to lower the risk of pre-eclampsia, usually from 12 weeks until around 36 weeks. Do not start or stop it in pregnancy without your doctor's advice.
Why should children not be given aspirin?
Aspirin in children under 16 with a viral illness can cause Reye's syndrome, a rare but life-threatening liver and brain condition. Use paracetamol for fever in children.
