Uses
- Stomach cramps and abdominal colic – spasm-type pain in the gut.
- Painful periods (dysmenorrhoea) with cramping.
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) pain and cramps.
- Dicyclomine relaxes the gut muscle and paracetamol relieves the pain and any fever.
How to take it
Take one tablet with water when you have cramping pain, usually up to three times a day or as your doctor advises, with or without food. Leave at least 4 to 6 hours between doses and do not take more than the prescribed number in 24 hours. Remember each tablet contains 500 mg paracetamol – count it towards your daily paracetamol limit and do not take Dolo, Calpol, Crocin or cold-and-flu combinations at the same time. This is for short-term relief of a few days. See a doctor if pain lasts beyond 2 to 3 days, if there is fever, vomiting, blood in stool, severe tenderness, or if a child or elderly person is affected.
Side effects
Common
- Dry mouth.
- Drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision.
- Constipation or nausea.
- Reduced sweating – take care in hot weather.
Serious
Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.
- Difficulty passing urine, very fast heartbeat, confusion or hallucinations (too much dicyclomine).
- Liver damage from paracetamol overdose – nausea, pain under the right ribs, yellow eyes – especially if combined with other paracetamol products or alcohol.
- Severe allergic reaction – rash, swelling of face or throat, difficulty breathing.
- Heat stroke in hot climates because sweating is reduced.
Safety information
Alcohol
Avoid alcohol – it increases drowsiness from dicyclomine and raises the risk of paracetamol liver damage.
Pregnancy
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding; paracetamol is generally acceptable but dicyclomine is used only if clearly needed, and it is not recommended while breastfeeding.
Kidney problems
Tell your doctor about kidney disease; dicyclomine can cause urinary retention and the dose may need review.
Liver problems
Use with care in liver disease because of the paracetamol; do not exceed the dose.
Children
Not for infants under 6 months (dicyclomine has caused serious breathing problems in babies). For older children use only the paediatric drops or syrup at a doctor-prescribed dose.
Missed dose
It is usually taken only when needed. If on a schedule, take it when you remember unless the next dose is close; never double.
Interactions
- Other paracetamol products – Dolo 650, Calpol, Crocin, cold-and-flu tablets – overdose risk; check every label.
- Antacids (Gelusil, Digene) – reduce absorption of dicyclomine; take 1 to 2 hours apart.
- Other anticholinergic medicines – antihistamines (cetirizine, chlorpheniramine), amitriptyline, hyoscine (Buscopan) – more dry mouth, constipation and confusion.
- Sleeping tablets, alcohol, opioids – added drowsiness.
- Warfarin – regular paracetamol can raise INR; tell your doctor.
- Metoclopramide/domperidone – dicyclomine may reduce their effect on the gut.
Frequently asked questions
What is Cyclopam tablet used for?
Cyclopam contains dicyclomine 20 mg and paracetamol 500 mg. Dicyclomine relaxes cramping muscles in the stomach and intestines while paracetamol relieves pain, so it is used for abdominal colic, stomach cramps, period pain and IBS-related cramps.
Can I take Cyclopam for period pain?
Yes, it is commonly used for cramping period pain. Take one tablet when the cramps start, up to the number of doses your doctor advises. If you also take mefenamic acid (Meftal Spas) or another painkiller, check that you are not doubling up on paracetamol.
Can I take Cyclopam with Dolo 650?
Not together. Cyclopam already contains 500 mg paracetamol, and adding Dolo 650 pushes you towards the daily paracetamol limit and liver damage. If pain needs more, ask your doctor rather than stacking tablets.
How quickly does Cyclopam work?
It usually eases cramps within 30 to 60 minutes. If pain is severe, keeps coming back, or is accompanied by fever, vomiting, blood in the stool or a hard tender abdomen, do not keep taking Cyclopam – get a doctor to look for appendicitis, infection or another cause.
Does Cyclopam cause drowsiness?
Yes, dicyclomine can cause drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth and blurred vision. Avoid driving or riding a two-wheeler until you know how it affects you, and do not combine it with alcohol.
Is Cyclopam safe in pregnancy?
Paracetamol is considered acceptable in pregnancy, but dicyclomine should only be used if a doctor feels it is clearly needed. Do not self-medicate abdominal pain in pregnancy – it needs a doctor's assessment.
Can I give Cyclopam to my child for stomach pain?
Not the adult tablet. Dicyclomine must never be given to babies under 6 months, and older children need the paediatric drops or syrup at a weight-based dose from a doctor. Persistent stomach pain in a child needs a check, not just a painkiller.
Cyclopam vs Meftal Spas – which is better for cramps?
Cyclopam pairs dicyclomine with paracetamol; Meftal Spas pairs dicyclomine with mefenamic acid, an NSAID that is stronger for period pain but harder on the stomach and kidneys. Cyclopam is gentler on the stomach, Meftal Spas may suit severe period cramps. Do not take both together.
Can Cyclopam be taken for acidity or gas?
It is not an antacid and does not treat acidity. It helps crampy gut pain and may slow the bowel, which can worsen constipation and bloating. For acidity use an antacid or a doctor-prescribed acid reducer instead.
