Uses

  • Stomach and intestinal cramps.
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) with cramping pain.
  • Period pain with cramps.
  • Spasm of the bile duct or urinary tract (renal colic), along with other treatment.

How to take it

Take one 10 mg tablet three times a day when you have cramps, with or without food, swallowed whole with water – do not crush or chew. If needed, your doctor may increase to two tablets up to four times a day. Children aged 6 to 11 can take one tablet three times a day on a doctor's advice. Do not use it for more than 2 weeks unless a doctor says so; cramps that keep returning need the cause investigated. It relaxes gut muscle but does not treat infection, ulcer or constipation.

  • Inhalers such as ipratropium and tiotropium – added anticholinergic effects.

Frequently asked questions

What is Buscogast used for?

Buscogast (hyoscine butylbromide) relieves cramping pain in the stomach and intestines, IBS cramps and period pain by relaxing the gut muscle. It does not treat infections, acidity or constipation.

How many Buscogast tablets can I take in a day?

Usually one 10 mg tablet three times a day; your doctor may increase to two tablets up to four times a day. Do not use it for more than 2 weeks without medical advice.

Buscogast before or after food?

Either – it works with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water.

Can I take Buscogast with alcohol?

Avoid alcohol. It increases dizziness and drowsiness and usually worsens stomach problems.

Can I take Buscogast for loose motions?

It can ease the cramps that come with diarrhoea, but it does not stop the diarrhoea or treat its cause. Use ORS and see a doctor if there is fever, blood or it lasts more than 2 days.

Buscogast vs Meftal-Spas – which is better for period cramps?

Buscogast only relaxes the muscle; Meftal-Spas also contains a painkiller (mefenamic acid). For purely cramping pain Buscogast has fewer stomach side effects; for pain with inflammation the combination may work better. Ask your doctor.

Is Buscogast safe in pregnancy?

Only on a doctor's advice. It is used in pregnancy when clearly needed, but do not self-medicate.

Can I give Buscogast to a child?

Children aged 6 to 11 can take one tablet three times a day if a doctor advises. It is not for children under 6.
