Uses
- Pain and stiffness of rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.
- Osteoarthritis (knee and joint wear-and-tear pain), at the lower doses.
- Acute gout attacks, for the painful days only.
- Short-term pain after dental surgery and other acute pain, for a few days.
How to take it
Take one 90 mg tablet once a day, with or without food, swallowed whole with water; it may work faster on an empty stomach. Use the lowest dose that controls your symptoms for the shortest possible time, because the risk of heart attack and stroke rises with higher doses and longer use. For dental pain the 90 mg dose is used for a maximum of 3 days, and for arthritis your doctor will review whether you still need it. Do not take it with other painkillers of the same type (diclofenac, ibuprofen, aceclofenac). Stop and see a doctor if you get chest pain, breathlessness, ankle swelling, black stools or yellow eyes.
Side effects
Common
- Stomach pain, indigestion, heartburn, nausea.
- Dizziness or headache.
- Swelling of the legs or feet, raised blood pressure.
- Palpitations, tiredness, mouth ulcers.
Serious
Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.
- Chest pain, breathlessness or sudden weakness on one side – possible heart attack or stroke. Call emergency services.
- Black stools, vomiting blood or severe persistent stomach pain (ulcer or bleeding).
- Yellow skin or eyes, dark urine (liver problems).
- Severe rash with blisters, or swelling of the face and throat.
Safety information
Alcohol
Limit alcohol. It increases the chance of stomach irritation and bleeding with this kind of painkiller.
Pregnancy
Must not be taken during pregnancy or while trying to conceive, and not while breastfeeding.
Kidney problems
Not for people with serious kidney disease. Tell your doctor about any kidney problem; blood pressure and kidney function may be monitored.
Liver problems
Not for severe liver disease. In mild liver disease the dose is limited to 60 mg a day, so the 90 mg tablet may not be suitable.
Children
Not for anyone under 16 years.
Missed dose
Just take your usual dose the next day. Do not take a double dose.
Interactions
- Other NSAID painkillers (diclofenac, ibuprofen, aceclofenac, high-dose aspirin) – do not combine. Low-dose aspirin for the heart can continue if your doctor agrees.
- Blood thinners (warfarin) – bleeding risk rises; INR needs checking.
- Blood pressure medicines (ramipril, enalapril, telmisartan, losartan) and water pills – less effective and more kidney strain.
- Lithium, methotrexate, ciclosporin, tacrolimus – levels or toxicity can rise.
- Rifampicin – lowers etoricoxib levels.
- Combined contraceptive pills and HRT – higher chance of side effects; tell your doctor.
Frequently asked questions
Etoshine 90 vs Etoshine 120 – what is the difference?
Both contain etoricoxib. 90 mg is the usual dose for rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and dental pain, while 120 mg is reserved for acute gout attacks for a maximum of 8 days. Use the strength your doctor prescribed.
Etoshine 90 before or after food?
It can be taken with or without food. Taking it without food may make it work a little faster; if it upsets your stomach, take it after a meal.
Is Nucoxia 90 safe for the heart?
Etoricoxib can raise blood pressure and the risk of heart attack and stroke, especially at high doses or with long use. It must not be used by people with heart disease, previous stroke or uncontrolled blood pressure.
Can I take Etoshine 90 with alcohol?
It is better to avoid or strictly limit alcohol, because both can irritate the stomach and increase bleeding risk.
Can I take Etoshine 90 with Dolo 650?
Yes, paracetamol can be taken alongside etoricoxib if your doctor advises. Do not combine it with other NSAIDs like diclofenac or ibuprofen.
How many days can I take Etoshine 90?
For dental pain, a maximum of 3 days. For arthritis, your doctor will decide, using the lowest dose for the shortest time and reviewing you regularly.
Is Etoshine 90 safe in pregnancy?
No. Etoricoxib must not be taken during pregnancy, while trying to conceive, or while breastfeeding.
Does Etoshine cause acidity?
Stomach pain, indigestion and heartburn are common. Etoricoxib is gentler on the stomach than older painkillers but can still cause ulcers, so report black stools or severe pain immediately.
