Uses

  • Headache and migraine.
  • Joint and muscle pain, back pain, sprains and pain after injury.
  • Toothache and dental pain.
  • Period pain.
  • Fever and inflammation, when a doctor prefers it over paracetamol.

How to take it

Take one 400 mg tablet at a time, with or just after food, up to 3 times a day with at least 4 hours between doses – no more than 3 tablets in 24 hours. Swallow it whole with water. Use the smallest dose for the shortest time; do not take it for more than 10 days unless your doctor says so. See a doctor if pain gets worse or does not improve, or if you get black stools, vomit blood or stomach pain.

Side effects

Common

  • Indigestion, stomach ache, nausea or vomiting.
  • Headache or dizziness.
  • Diarrhoea or constipation.
  • Rash.

Serious

Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.

  • Stomach ulcer or bleeding – black tar-like stools, vomiting blood, severe stomach pain.
  • Kidney problems – blood in the urine, swelling of the ankles, feet or hands, passing less urine.
  • Severe allergic reaction – swelling of the throat or tongue, wheezing, difficulty breathing (more likely if you have asthma).

Safety information

Alcohol

Avoid drinking a lot of alcohol; it increases the risk of stomach bleeding and kidney side effects.

Pregnancy

Avoid ibuprofen in pregnancy unless a doctor advises it – paracetamol is preferred. Check with a doctor before using it while breastfeeding.

Kidney problems

Not suitable if you have kidney disease; ibuprofen can reduce kidney function, especially if you are dehydrated or on blood pressure medicines.

Liver problems

Tell your doctor if you have a liver condition; it may be unsuitable.

Children

The 400 mg tablet is for adults and older children as a doctor directs; younger children use ibuprofen syrup dosed by weight.

Missed dose

Take it when needed, keeping at least 4 hours between doses. Do not take two tablets together.

Interactions

  • Blood thinners such as warfarin, clopidogrel or aspirin – higher bleeding risk.
  • Other NSAIDs – diclofenac, naproxen, aceclofenac, Combiflam – do not combine; stomach ulcer risk rises.
  • Blood pressure medicines (telmisartan, amlodipine, enalapril) and diuretics – ibuprofen can reduce their effect and strain the kidneys.
  • Steroids such as prednisolone – stomach bleeding risk.
  • Antidepressants (SSRIs like sertraline, escitalopram) – bleeding risk.
  • Paracetamol can be taken alongside ibuprofen if needed.

Frequently asked questions

Brufen 400 before or after food?

With or just after food. Taking ibuprofen on an empty stomach makes indigestion, stomach pain and ulcers more likely.

How many Brufen 400 can I take in a day?

One tablet at a time, up to 3 times a day, with at least 4 hours between doses – no more than 3 tablets in 24 hours unless your doctor prescribes otherwise.

Brufen 400 vs Combiflam – what is the difference?

Brufen 400 is plain ibuprofen 400 mg. Combiflam combines ibuprofen 400 mg with paracetamol. Do not take both together, as you would be doubling the ibuprofen.

Can I take Brufen 400 with alcohol?

Avoid drinking much alcohol with ibuprofen. The combination increases the risk of stomach bleeding and kidney problems.

Is Brufen 400 safe in pregnancy?

No, avoid it in pregnancy unless a doctor specifically advises it. Paracetamol is the preferred painkiller in pregnancy.

Can I take Brufen 400 for fever in dengue?

No. Ibuprofen and other NSAIDs can increase bleeding risk in dengue. Use paracetamol for fever and see a doctor if dengue is suspected.

Can I take Ibugesic 400 with my BP tablets?

Regular ibuprofen can raise blood pressure, reduce the effect of BP medicines and strain the kidneys. Use it only occasionally and tell your doctor if you need it often.

Does Brufen 400 need a prescription in India?

Ibuprofen 400 mg is a Schedule H medicine and should be dispensed against a prescription, even though lower strengths are often sold over the counter.

Can I take Brufen 400 with Dolo 650?

Yes, paracetamol and ibuprofen can be taken together if needed, but keep each within its own daily limit and do not add other painkillers.
