Uses

  • Functional dyspepsia – bloating, feeling full quickly, upper stomach discomfort after meals.
  • Nausea and vomiting linked to slow stomach emptying.
  • Acid reflux with regurgitation, alongside an acid-reducing medicine such as pantoprazole.
  • Diabetic gastroparesis (slow stomach emptying), under a doctor's care.

How to take it

Take one 50 mg tablet three times a day, 15 to 30 minutes before meals, with water. Itopride speeds up stomach emptying, so timing it before food matters. Courses are usually 2 to 4 weeks; your doctor will review whether you still need it. Prokinetic medicines of this type are best used at the lowest dose for the shortest time. See a doctor if you have black stools, vomiting of blood, unexplained weight loss or difficulty swallowing, as these need investigation rather than a prokinetic.

Side effects

Common

  • Diarrhoea or loose stools.
  • Stomach pain.
  • Headache or dizziness.
  • Dry mouth.

Serious

Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.

  • Fast or irregular heartbeat or fainting – stop and see a doctor.
  • Unusual or uncontrolled movements of the face or limbs.
  • Severe allergic reaction – swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing.
  • Breast swelling or milk production – from raised prolactin; tell your doctor.

Safety information

Alcohol

Avoid alcohol; it worsens acidity and slows stomach emptying, which works against the medicine.

Pregnancy

Not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding unless your doctor considers it essential, because safety data is limited.

Kidney problems

Tell your doctor about kidney disease; a lower dose may be used.

Liver problems

Tell your doctor about liver disease; itopride is broken down in the body and a lower dose may be needed.

Children

Not recommended for children under 16.

Missed dose

Take it when you remember if it is before the next meal; otherwise skip it and take the next dose before the following meal. Do not double up.

Interactions

  • Anticholinergic medicines (dicyclomine, hyoscine, some antispasmodics) – work against itopride and cancel its effect.
  • Other prokinetics or anti-sickness medicines (domperidone, metoclopramide, ondansetron) – do not combine without your doctor's advice.
  • Antacids and acid blockers (pantoprazole) – commonly prescribed together; no problem.
  • Medicines that affect heart rhythm (some antibiotics, antifungals, antidepressants) – tell your doctor before combining.

Frequently asked questions

Ganaton before or after food?

Before food. Take it 15 to 30 minutes before meals so that the stomach is moving faster when the food arrives.

Ganaton vs Ganaton OD – what is the difference?

Ganaton 50 mg is taken three times a day before meals. Ganaton OD is a 150 mg once-daily sustained-release tablet for convenience. Your doctor picks based on your routine.

Itopride vs domperidone – which is better?

Both speed stomach emptying. Domperidone has more concerns about heart rhythm and is limited to short courses; itopride is thought to affect the heart less, but data is more limited. Your doctor will choose based on your heart health and other medicines.

Can I take Ganaton with pantoprazole?

Yes, this is a common combination for reflux with bloating, and fixed-dose tablets such as Pan-IT exist. Take pantoprazole before breakfast and itopride before each meal as prescribed.

Can I take Ganaton with alcohol?

Avoid it. Alcohol slows stomach emptying and worsens acidity, undoing the benefit.

Is Ganaton safe in pregnancy?

There is little safety data, so it is not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding unless your doctor decides it is essential.

How long can I take itopride?

Usually 2 to 4 weeks, then your doctor reviews you. It treats symptoms, not the cause, so persistent bloating or pain needs investigation.

Is itopride available without prescription in India?

No. It is a Schedule H medicine and should be sold only against a prescription.
