Uses

  • Heartburn, acidity and sour burps.
  • Acid reflux disease (GERD).
  • Stomach and duodenal ulcers, and preventing ulcers caused by painkillers.
  • Conditions where the stomach makes too much acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

How to take it

Take one 150 mg tablet once or twice a day as prescribed – commonly one at night or one in the morning and one at bedtime – swallowed whole with water, with or without food. For occasional heartburn it can be taken 30 to 60 minutes before a meal that usually triggers symptoms. Do not use it for more than 2 weeks on your own; if symptoms continue, see a doctor, because persistent acidity needs proper assessment. Ulcer courses usually run for 4 to 8 weeks under a doctor's supervision.

Side effects

Common

  • Headache.
  • Constipation or diarrhoea.
  • Nausea or stomach pain.

Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.

  • Severe allergic reaction – rash, swelling, difficulty breathing.

Safety information

Alcohol

Alcohol does not interact directly, but it worsens acidity and reflux, so limit it during treatment.

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Ranitidine has been used in pregnancy for heartburn when the doctor considers it necessary.

Kidney problems

Tell your doctor about kidney disease; the dose is usually halved because ranitidine is removed by the kidneys.

Liver problems

Tell your doctor about liver disease before starting.

Children

Used in children only at a weight-based dose prescribed by a paediatrician.

Missed dose

Take it as soon as you remember unless the next dose is nearly due – then skip it. Do not double the dose.

Interactions

  • Medicines that need stomach acid to absorb – ketoconazole, itraconazole, some HIV medicines (atazanavir) – may work less well.
  • Antacids (Digene, Gelusil) – leave about 2 hours between them and ranitidine.
  • Warfarin – rarely alters bleeding tendency; INR may be checked.
  • Glipizide, metformin and other diabetes tablets – blood sugar may change slightly.
  • Pioglitazone – listed as an interaction; tell your doctor.

Frequently asked questions

Rantac 150 before or after food?

It works either way. For night-time acidity take it at bedtime; for meal-related heartburn take it 30 to 60 minutes before the meal.

Rantac 150 vs Rantac 300 – which should I take?

Both are ranitidine. 150 mg is the usual dose taken once or twice daily; 300 mg is a single bedtime dose used for some ulcer treatments. Follow your doctor's prescription.

Rantac vs Pan 40 – which is better for acidity?

Pan 40 (pantoprazole) blocks acid more strongly and longer and is preferred for reflux disease and ulcers. Rantac (ranitidine) acts faster for occasional heartburn. Your doctor decides based on how severe and frequent your symptoms are.

Can I take Rantac 150 daily for a long time?

Not without a doctor's review. Over-the-counter use should be limited to 2 weeks; ongoing acidity needs assessment to rule out ulcers or other causes.

Can I take Rantac with alcohol?

There is no direct interaction, but alcohol increases acid production and reflux, so it undoes the benefit. Keep alcohol to a minimum.

Is Rantac safe in pregnancy?

Ranitidine has been used in pregnancy for heartburn when a doctor considers it necessary. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before taking it.

Was ranitidine banned?

Several countries restricted ranitidine in 2020 over a possible impurity. In India it remains on sale as a prescription medicine; ask your doctor whether ranitidine or an alternative like famotidine or pantoprazole is right for you.

How quickly does Rantac 150 work?

Relief from heartburn usually begins within an hour and lasts up to 12 hours, which is why it is taken once or twice a day.
