Uses

  • Common cold with blocked or runny nose, sneezing and headache.
  • Fever and body ache that come with a cold or flu.
  • Sinus congestion and pressure.
  • Allergic runny nose and sneezing with associated headache (short-term relief).

How to take it

Take one tablet with water, usually every 4 to 6 hours as needed, or as your doctor advises, with or after food. Do not take more tablets than prescribed, and do not take any other paracetamol product (Dolo, Crocin, Calpol) or cold remedy at the same time, because the ingredients overlap. It causes drowsiness, so avoid driving. Stop and see a doctor if symptoms do not improve within 7 days, if fever is high or lasts more than 3 days, or if you get a rash or persistent headache.

Side effects

Common

  • Drowsiness and tiredness.
  • Dry mouth, nose or throat.
  • Nervousness, dizziness or trouble sleeping (from phenylephrine).
  • Nausea, constipation or loss of appetite.

Serious

Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.

  • Difficulty passing urine (especially men with prostate enlargement).
  • Blurred vision or eye pain (glaucoma can worsen).
  • Very high blood pressure, fast or pounding heartbeat.
  • Allergic reaction – rash with blisters, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing. Liver damage if too much paracetamol is taken.

Safety information

Alcohol

Avoid alcohol. It greatly increases drowsiness from chlorpheniramine and strains the liver together with paracetamol.

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding. Plain paracetamol is usually preferred over combination cold tablets.

Kidney problems

Tell your doctor about kidney disease before taking it; doses may need spacing out.

Liver problems

Not suitable if you have liver disease unless a doctor advises; paracetamol overdose damages the liver.

Children

This adult tablet is not for young children. Cold products with these ingredients are not recommended under 4 years; older children need age-specific syrups prescribed by a doctor.

Missed dose

It is taken when needed, so just take the next dose when symptoms return, keeping the gap your doctor advised. Do not double up.

Interactions

  • Other paracetamol or cold-and-flu products (Dolo, Crocin, Sinarest syrup, Cheston Cold) – risk of overdose.
  • MAO inhibitor antidepressants (phenelzine, selegiline) – do not combine with phenylephrine, including within 2 weeks of stopping them.
  • Sleeping pills, anti-anxiety medicines and alcohol – extra drowsiness.
  • Blood pressure and heart medicines – phenylephrine can raise blood pressure; tell your doctor if you have hypertension, heart disease, thyroid disease or diabetes.
  • The antibiotic flucloxacillin – interacts with paracetamol.

Frequently asked questions

What is Sinarest tablet used for?

It relieves cold and flu symptoms – blocked or runny nose, sneezing, headache, body ache and fever. Paracetamol treats pain and fever, chlorpheniramine dries the runny nose and phenylephrine unblocks it.

Does Sinarest cause sleepiness?

Yes. Chlorpheniramine commonly causes drowsiness. Do not drive or operate machines after taking it, and avoid alcohol.

Can I take Sinarest with Dolo 650?

No. Sinarest already contains paracetamol, so adding Dolo 650 risks a paracetamol overdose and liver damage.

Sinarest vs Febrex Plus – what is the difference?

Both contain the same three ingredients in the same strengths; they are different brands. Choose by availability or your doctor's advice.

Can I take Sinarest if I have high blood pressure?

Ask your doctor first. Phenylephrine can raise blood pressure and heart rate, so people with hypertension, heart disease or thyroid problems should be careful.

Is Sinarest safe in pregnancy?

Tell your doctor before taking it. For a cold in pregnancy, plain paracetamol and steam inhalation are usually preferred over combination tablets.

How many Sinarest tablets can I take in a day?

Follow the pack or your doctor's advice and never exceed it; the paracetamol content limits the daily number. If you still need it after 7 days, see a doctor.

Does Sinarest need a prescription in India?

Yes, this combination is a Schedule H medicine and should be dispensed against a prescription, even though it is widely asked for by name.
