Uses

  • Stopping a migraine attack with or without aura once it has started.
  • Relieving the headache, nausea and light sensitivity of a migraine.
  • Not for preventing migraines or for other kinds of headache.

How to take it

Take one 10 mg tablet at the first sign of a migraine headache, swallowed whole with water; the mouth-dissolving (MD) version is placed on the tongue and needs no water. If the headache improves but comes back, a second tablet can be taken after at least 2 hours; do not take more than 2 tablets in 24 hours. If the first tablet does not help at all, do not take a second for that attack – see your doctor. Do not use it on more than 10 days a month, as frequent use causes medication-overuse headache. Tell your doctor if you need it for more than 4 attacks a month, as a preventive medicine may be needed.

Side effects

Common

  • Dizziness or sleepiness.
  • Tiredness or weakness.
  • Flushing or a warm feeling.
  • Dry mouth or nausea.
  • Tingling or heaviness in the limbs.

Serious

Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.

  • Tightness, pain or pressure in the chest, throat, neck or jaw – stop and seek urgent care.
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat, breathlessness.
  • Weakness or numbness on one side, trouble speaking (stroke-like symptoms).
  • Serotonin syndrome – fever, sweating, confusion, muscle stiffness, when combined with antidepressants.
  • Pale or blue, cold fingers and toes, or bloody diarrhoea (reduced blood flow).

Safety information

Alcohol

Alcohol does not interact directly, but it is a migraine trigger and adds to drowsiness. Best avoided during an attack.

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning or breastfeeding. It is used in pregnancy only when needed; your doctor may prefer paracetamol first.

Kidney problems

Tell your doctor about kidney disease; it may not be suitable or a lower dose may be used.

Liver problems

Not suitable in severe liver disease; a 5 mg dose may be used in milder liver problems.

Children

Not usually used under 18 in India; a paediatric neurologist decides.

Missed dose

Not applicable – it is taken only when a migraine starts, not on a schedule.

Interactions

  • Propranolol (common migraine preventive) – raises rizatriptan levels; the 5 mg dose is used instead. Tell your doctor.
  • Other triptans (sumatriptan, naratriptan) and ergot medicines (ergotamine, Vasograin) – do not use within 24 hours of each other.
  • MAO inhibitors – do not use within 2 weeks.
  • Antidepressants (fluoxetine, sertraline, escitalopram, duloxetine, amitriptyline) and tramadol – serotonin syndrome risk; watch for fever, agitation, twitching.
  • Not suitable with uncontrolled high blood pressure or heart disease – tell your doctor your history.

Frequently asked questions

When should I take Rizact 10?

As soon as the migraine headache begins – it works best early. It is not a preventive; do not take it daily or for a headache that is not migraine.

Can I take a second Rizact 10 if the migraine comes back?

Yes, if the first dose helped and the pain returns after 2 hours or more. Do not take more than 2 tablets in 24 hours. If the first tablet did not work at all, do not take a second for that attack.

Rizact 10 vs Rizact 10 MD – what is the difference?

Same medicine. The MD tablet dissolves on the tongue without water, which is useful when you are nauseated or travelling. Keep it in the foil until use and handle with dry hands.

Can I take Rizact 10 with alcohol?

Avoid it during an attack. Alcohol is a common migraine trigger and increases drowsiness and dizziness.

Is Rizact 10 safe in pregnancy?

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a baby. It is used only when needed; paracetamol is usually tried first in pregnancy.

Can I take Rizact with propranolol (Ciplar) or Inderal?

Propranolol raises rizatriptan levels, so doctors usually prescribe the 5 mg strength if you take propranolol daily. Tell your doctor about all preventive medicines.

Can I take Rizact 10 with Nexito or other antidepressants?

Occasional use is often acceptable, but the combination can cause serotonin syndrome. Tell your doctor, and seek help for fever, agitation, sweating or muscle twitching after a dose.

Why does my doctor say not to take Rizora more than 10 days a month?

Taking triptans or painkillers too often causes medication-overuse headache – a daily headache that only improves when the medicine is stopped. Frequent attacks need a preventive medicine instead.

Is Rizact 10 safe if I have high blood pressure or heart disease?

Triptans narrow blood vessels and are not used in uncontrolled hypertension, heart disease or past stroke. Tell your doctor your full history before taking it.
