Frequently asked questions
Zinc syrup uses for babies
Zinc syrup is used for zinc deficiency and, on a doctor's advice, together with ORS when a child has diarrhoea. The dose depends on the child's age, so follow your doctor.
Can zinc syrup be given with ORS?
Yes. WHO advises a 10–14 day course of zinc alongside ORS during diarrhoea – it shortens the episode. Zinc does not replace ORS, so keep giving ORS and fluids.
How many days should zinc syrup be given?
For diarrhoea, WHO advises a 10–14 day course; otherwise give it for the number of days your doctor advises. Do not keep giving it for months without a review, because long-term excess zinc can lower copper.
Zinc syrup side effects
Nausea, vomiting soon after a dose, stomach upset and a metallic taste can occur. Giving it after food helps. See a doctor if vomiting is repeated.
