Uses
- Zinc deficiency diagnosed by your doctor – signs can include problems with taste or smell and wounds that are slow to heal.
- Short courses of zinc that your doctor recommends alongside other treatment.
- Specific conditions in which a doctor prescribes high-dose zinc and monitors you.
How to take it
Take one tablet a day after a meal with water, only if a doctor has advised this strength. 50 mg is a high dose: the NHS advises not taking more than 25 mg of zinc a day from supplements unless a doctor tells you to, because high doses reduce the copper your body can absorb, which can lead to anaemia and weak bones. Taking zinc after food reduces nausea. Use it only for the period your doctor sets, and do not combine it with multivitamins or other zinc products unless they have checked the total. If you develop vomiting, stomach cramps or diarrhoea a few hours after a dose, stop and speak to your doctor.
Side effects
Common
- Nausea, especially on an empty stomach.
- Stomach cramps or diarrhoea.
- Metallic taste.
Serious
Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.
- Vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhoea within 3–10 hours of a large dose – signs of too much zinc.
- Tiredness, paleness or breathlessness after weeks or months – excess zinc can cause copper deficiency and anaemia.
- Allergic reaction – rash, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing.
Safety information
Alcohol
No direct interaction, but heavy drinking lowers zinc and harms absorption of nutrients; keep alcohol low.
Pregnancy
Do not take 50 mg zinc tablets in pregnancy or while breastfeeding unless your doctor prescribes them; pregnancy supplements already contain a smaller amount.
Kidney problems
Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease before taking mineral supplements.
Liver problems
Tell your doctor if you have liver disease; your doctor will decide the dose.
Children
This strength is not for children. Children's zinc doses are much smaller and are decided by a doctor.
Missed dose
Take it with your next meal if you remember the same day; otherwise skip it. Do not take two together.
Interactions
- Ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, ofloxacin and other quinolone antibiotics – zinc reduces their absorption; take the antibiotic at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after.
- Doxycycline and other tetracycline antibiotics – keep them apart from mineral supplements.
- Iron, calcium and multivitamin supplements – check the total zinc and space them out as your doctor advises.
- Long-term use – excess zinc lowers copper, iron and magnesium; your doctor may check your blood.
Frequently asked questions
Zinc 50 mg tablet uses
Zinc 50 mg is used for zinc deficiency diagnosed by a doctor and in specific conditions where a doctor prescribes high-dose zinc. It is a high dose and is not meant for everyday use without medical advice.
Can I take zinc 50 mg daily?
Only if your doctor advises it. The NHS recommends not taking more than 25 mg of zinc a day from supplements unless a doctor tells you to, because long-term high doses lower copper and can cause anaemia.
Zinconia 50 tablet uses
Zinconia 50 contains zinc acetate equivalent to 50 mg zinc. It is used when a doctor wants you to take a high dose of zinc for a deficiency or a specific condition.
Zinc tablet side effects
Nausea, stomach cramps, diarrhoea and a metallic taste are common, especially on an empty stomach. Taking too much can cause vomiting within hours, and long-term excess can lead to copper deficiency.
Is zinc good for hair fall and acne?
Zinc helps the body make new cells and heal wounds, but there is no good evidence that 50 mg zinc treats hair fall or acne in people who are not deficient. See a dermatologist instead of self-treating with high-dose zinc.
Zinc before or after food?
After food. Zinc on an empty stomach often causes nausea.
Can I take zinc with antibiotics?
Keep them apart. Zinc reduces absorption of antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin and doxycycline – take the antibiotic at least 2 hours before the zinc tablet.
Zinc 50 mg vs zinc 20 mg – what is the difference?
20 mg is below the 25 mg a day the NHS considers the upper limit for adults without medical advice; 50 mg is a high treatment dose that should be used only on a doctor's advice.
