Uses

  • Hair fall or brittle nails when a doctor suspects low biotin, zinc or other nutrients.
  • Nutritional support prescribed by a dermatologist alongside treatment for the cause of hair loss.
  • Topping up these nutrients when diet is poor, on medical advice.

How to take it

Take one tablet a day after a meal, or as your dermatologist advises. These tablets contain high amounts of several nutrients: 10 mg biotin (the NHS considers 0.9 mg a day or less from supplements unlikely to cause harm), 22.5 mg zinc (close to the NHS limit of 25 mg a day unless a doctor advises more) and 3 mg copper. Do not take them alongside other biotin, zinc or multivitamin products. Hair fall has many causes – thyroid problems, iron deficiency, hormones, stress – so see a doctor if it is heavy or sudden. Biotin can interfere with certain lab tests (such as the troponin test for heart attack), so tell your doctor before any blood test. Review with your doctor after 2–3 months.

Side effects

Common

  • Nausea or stomach upset, especially on an empty stomach.
  • Metallic taste.
  • Diarrhoea or stomach cramps.

Serious

Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.

  • Vomiting, cramps and diarrhoea within hours of a dose – signs of too much zinc.
  • Tiredness or paleness after long use – excess zinc can lower copper and cause anaemia.
  • Allergic reaction – rash, swelling, difficulty breathing.

Safety information

Alcohol

No direct interaction; keep alcohol low.

Pregnancy

Do not take in pregnancy or breastfeeding unless your doctor prescribes it.

Kidney problems

Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease before taking mineral supplements.

Liver problems

Tell your doctor if you have liver disease.

Children

Not for children.

Missed dose

Take the next dose at the usual time; do not double up.

Interactions

  • Blood tests – biotin can make a troponin (heart attack) test read falsely low; tell the doctor ordering any test.
  • Antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin and doxycycline – zinc reduces their absorption; keep them apart.
  • Iron, calcium and other zinc or biotin supplements – check the totals and space them out.

Frequently asked questions

Tinfal Forte tablet uses

Tinfal Forte contains biotin 10 mg, calcium pantothenate, zinc, copper, selenium and acetylcysteine. Dermatologists sometimes prescribe it as nutritional support in hair fall and brittle nails.

Do hair vitamins really stop hair fall?

They help only if hair loss is linked to a nutrient deficiency. Most hair fall has other causes, so a doctor should find the cause.

Tinfal Forte side effects

Nausea, stomach upset and a metallic taste can occur. Long-term excess zinc can lower copper and cause anaemia.

Can I take Tinfal Forte with Zincovit or biotin tablets?

No, not without your doctor – you could take too much zinc and biotin.

How long should I take hair vitamin tablets?

Usually for a few months as your doctor advises. If there is no change after 2–3 months, go back to your doctor.

Hair vitamin tablet before or after food?

After food, to reduce nausea from zinc.

Do biotin tablets affect blood tests?

Yes. Biotin can interfere with certain lab tests, such as making a troponin test read falsely low. Tell your doctor before any blood test.

Are hair vitamins safe in pregnancy?

Do not take them in pregnancy unless your doctor prescribes them.
