Uses
- Zinc deficiency in children or adults, as advised by a doctor.
- Zinc that a doctor prescribes for children alongside ORS during an episode of diarrhoea.
- Slow growth, poor appetite or slow wound healing when a doctor links them to low zinc.
How to take it
Give the dose your doctor or the label states, measured with the cup or syringe that comes with the bottle – not a kitchen spoon. Give it after food to reduce stomach upset. During diarrhoea, WHO advises a 10–14 day course of zinc together with ORS, not instead of it; keep giving ORS and fluids, and see a doctor urgently if your child has blood in the stool, is very sleepy, cannot drink or is passing very little urine. Finish the number of days the doctor advises and do not continue for months without review – the NHS advises adults not to take more than 25 mg of zinc a day unless a doctor tells them to, and long-term excess lowers copper.
Side effects
Common
- Nausea or vomiting soon after a dose.
- Stomach upset or cramps.
- Metallic taste.
Serious
Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.
- Repeated vomiting, cramps and diarrhoea after a large dose – signs of too much zinc.
- Tiredness or paleness after long use – excess zinc can lower copper and cause anaemia.
- Allergic reaction – rash, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing.
Safety information
Alcohol
Not relevant for children. Adults: no direct interaction; keep alcohol low.
Pregnancy
Use in pregnancy or breastfeeding only as your doctor advises, and count zinc in your pregnancy supplements.
Kidney problems
Tell your doctor if the child or adult has kidney disease.
Liver problems
Tell your doctor about liver disease before using it.
Children
Use only the dose a doctor or the label gives for the child's age. Store the bottle out of children's reach.
Missed dose
Give the missed dose when you remember unless the next one is due soon; never double the dose.
Interactions
- Antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin and doxycycline – zinc reduces their absorption; give them at least 2 hours apart.
- Iron, calcium and multivitamin syrups – check the total zinc and space doses apart.
- Other zinc products, including drops and multivitamins with zinc – do not double up.
Frequently asked questions
Zinc syrup uses for babies
Zinc syrup is used for zinc deficiency and, on a doctor's advice, together with ORS when a child has diarrhoea. The dose depends on the child's age, so follow your doctor.
Can zinc syrup be given with ORS?
Yes. WHO advises a 10–14 day course of zinc alongside ORS during diarrhoea – it shortens the episode. Zinc does not replace ORS, so keep giving ORS and fluids.
How many days should zinc syrup be given?
For diarrhoea, WHO advises a 10–14 day course; otherwise give it for the number of days your doctor advises. Do not keep giving it for months without a review, because long-term excess zinc can lower copper.
Zinc syrup side effects
Nausea, vomiting soon after a dose, stomach upset and a metallic taste can occur. Giving it after food helps. See a doctor if vomiting is repeated.
What if my child vomits after zinc syrup?
If your child vomits within a short time of the dose, ask your doctor whether to repeat it. Do not give an extra dose on your own.
Zincomac syrup uses
Zincomac syrup contains zinc gluconate equal to 20 mg zinc per 5 ml. It is used for zinc deficiency and as a doctor advises during diarrhoea.
Can adults take zinc syrup?
Yes, if a doctor advises it. The NHS advises adults not to take more than 25 mg zinc a day from supplements without medical advice.
Should zinc syrup be given before or after food?
After food is usually better, as it reduces nausea and stomach upset.
