Uses

  • Biotin deficiency diagnosed by your doctor – signs include skin rash, hair loss and brittle nails.
  • Hair loss or brittle nails when your doctor wants to rule out or correct low biotin.
  • Specific medical conditions in which a doctor prescribes high-dose biotin.

How to take it

Take one tablet a day with water, with or after a meal, only if a doctor or dermatologist has advised it. 10 mg is a very high dose – adults need only about 30 micrograms a day, and the NHS says taking 0.9 mg or less a day from supplements is unlikely to cause harm, while there is not enough evidence about the effects of higher daily doses. Biotin is often taken for hair fall, but it only helps if hair loss is caused by biotin deficiency, which is rare. Very important: biotin can interfere with certain lab tests – for example it can make a heart attack (troponin) test read falsely low – so tell your doctor and the laboratory that you take biotin before any blood test. Review with your doctor after 2–3 months if there is no change.

Side effects

Common

  • Usually none – no toxic symptoms of biotin are known.
  • Extra biotin that the body does not use passes out in urine.
  • Stomach upset is possible, as with many supplements; taking it after food helps.

Serious

Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.

  • Wrong blood test results (for example a falsely low troponin in a heart attack) – always tell doctors you take biotin.
  • Allergic reaction – rash, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing.
  • Hair loss that is sudden, patchy or with other symptoms – needs a doctor's assessment, not a higher dose.

Skip the missed dose and take the next one as usual. Do not double up.

  • Other hair, skin and nail supplements – many already contain biotin; check the total.

Frequently asked questions

Does biotin 10 mg help hair growth?

Only if your hair loss is caused by biotin deficiency, which is rare. There is not good evidence that biotin grows hair in people with normal biotin levels. A dermatologist can find the real cause of hair fall.

What are the side effects of biotin?

Biotin usually causes no side effects, and no toxic symptoms are known. The main risk is that high-dose biotin can interfere with certain lab tests, such as making a heart attack (troponin) test read falsely low.

Should I stop biotin before a blood test?

Tell your doctor and the lab that you take biotin before any blood test, because it can interfere with certain tests. In an emergency, always mention it.

Can I take biotin 10 mg daily?

Only if a doctor advises it. Adults need about 30 micrograms a day; the NHS considers 0.9 mg or less a day from supplements unlikely to cause harm, and there is not enough evidence about higher daily doses.

BTN Forte tablet uses

BTN Forte contains biotin 10 mg. Doctors use it for biotin deficiency and sometimes in hair and nail problems linked to low biotin.

Biotin 5 mg or 10 mg – which is better?

Neither is better for people without a deficiency. If your doctor recommends biotin, use the lowest dose that works for you.

What are the signs of biotin deficiency?

Biotin deficiency is rare. Signs include skin rashes, hair loss and brittle nails, and it may cause muscle pain or a swollen tongue. A doctor can check whether these symptoms have another cause.

Can I take biotin in pregnancy?

Pregnant women need only about 30 micrograms a day. Do not take high-dose biotin in pregnancy unless your doctor advises it.

How long does biotin take to work for nails and hair?

If deficiency was the cause, improvement usually takes a few months as new hair and nail grow. If nothing changes after 2–3 months, see your doctor rather than continuing.
