Uses
- Vertigo – the spinning sensation from inner-ear problems such as Ménière's disease and vestibular neuritis.
- Motion sickness – nausea and vomiting during bus, car, boat or air travel.
- Nausea and vomiting linked to balance (vestibular) disorders.
- Sometimes prescribed for tinnitus and poor circulation, under a doctor.
How to take it
Swallow the tablet with water after a meal to reduce stomach upset; dispersible (DT) versions can be dissolved in a little water. For vertigo your doctor usually prescribes it two or three times a day for a short course until the dizziness settles. For travel sickness take it about 2 hours before the journey starts and repeat as the doctor or pack advises during long trips. It causes drowsiness, so do not drive or ride a two-wheeler until you know how it affects you. See a doctor if vertigo comes with severe headache, double vision, weakness of a limb or difficulty speaking – these need urgent assessment.
Side effects
Common
- Drowsiness and tiredness.
- Heartburn, bloating or nausea.
- Dry mouth.
- Weight gain with longer use.
Serious
Stop and get medical help urgently if you notice any of these.
- Slow, stiff, shaky movements like Parkinson's disease, mainly in older people taking it for months – stop and tell your doctor.
- Yellow skin or eyes (liver problem).
- Severe allergic reaction – swelling of face or throat, itchy rash, difficulty breathing.
- A raised ring-shaped rash on sun-exposed skin (lupus-like reaction).
Safety information
Alcohol
Avoid alcohol – it greatly increases the drowsiness caused by cinnarizine.
Pregnancy
Not usually recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding; ask your doctor, who may suggest an alternative.
Kidney problems
No specific dose change, but tell your doctor about kidney disease.
Liver problems
Use with care in liver disease and stop if you notice jaundice.
Children
Can be used for travel sickness in children aged 5 and above at lower doses; not for younger children without a doctor.
Missed dose
For vertigo, skip the missed dose and take the next one at the usual time. For travel sickness, take another dose if at least 8 hours have passed. Never double up.
Interactions
- Sleeping pills, anxiety medicines (alprazolam, diazepam, clonazepam) and zopiclone – much more drowsiness.
- Strong painkillers such as tramadol and codeine – added sedation.
- Amitriptyline and other sedating antidepressants or antihistamines (cetirizine, chlorpheniramine) – extra drowsiness and dry mouth.
- Alcohol – avoid.
- Skin allergy tests – stop cinnarizine a few days before, as it can hide the result; ask your doctor.
Frequently asked questions
What is Stugeron 25 used for?
Stugeron contains cinnarizine 25 mg, an antihistamine that calms the balance organ of the inner ear. It is prescribed for vertigo (spinning dizziness), Ménière's disease and to prevent motion sickness on long journeys.
How long does Stugeron take to work for vertigo?
It usually starts easing the spinning within an hour or two of a dose. For an attack of vertigo your doctor may give it for several days until the inner ear settles. If dizziness continues beyond a couple of weeks, go back for a proper ear and nerve check rather than continuing on your own.
Stugeron vs Vertin (betahistine) – which is better for vertigo?
Both are used for vertigo. Cinnarizine (Stugeron) works quickly and also stops nausea but causes drowsiness, so it suits short courses. Betahistine (Vertin) is less sedating and is often used for longer-term control of Ménière's disease. Your doctor may use one or both depending on the cause.
Can I drive after taking Stugeron?
Not until you know how it affects you. Cinnarizine commonly causes drowsiness and slower reactions, which is dangerous on a two-wheeler or in traffic. Avoid driving on the day of your first doses and never combine it with alcohol.
Can I take Stugeron for travel sickness?
Yes, this is one of its main uses. Take it about 2 hours before the bus, car or boat journey begins so it is working before motion starts. For children 5 to 11 a lower dose is used – check with a doctor or pharmacist.
Is Stugeron safe in pregnancy?
It is not usually recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding because safety data is limited. If you have vertigo or motion sickness while pregnant, ask your gynaecologist – there are alternatives considered safer.
Can elderly people take cinnarizine daily?
With caution. Long-term use in older adults is linked to Parkinson-like symptoms – tremor, stiffness and slow movement – and extra drowsiness raises fall risk. It is best used in short courses, and any new shaking should be reported to the doctor.
Does Stugeron cause weight gain?
Weight gain is a recognised side effect with regular use over weeks or months because cinnarizine can increase appetite. It is not usually a problem with short courses for travel sickness.
Is cinnarizine available without prescription in India?
Cinnarizine is a Schedule H medicine, so a chemist should ask for a prescription. Vertigo has many causes – some serious – so it is worth a doctor's check before starting rather than buying over the counter.
